re: hardware question, please...scanner??

Hi there...I need some input, please from anyone who has a Canonscan 5000F. I know this isn't a skins 'problem', but you've helped me before! The light in the scanner seems to stay on all the time, even when not in use. It also stays on even when the computer is turned off. My former scanner did not do this. Is this supposed to be? Won't I have problems with the light burning out and then trying to replace a bulb? Anyone know? Thanks.

I don't know about the Canon but I've seen some scanners do that. I've also seen updated drivers/patches on some scanners to stop that from happening. Check Canon's website for the latest drivers or their FAQ for that problem.

Did the FAQ route...nothing there on it at all. Just going to double check the scanner drivers now. They SHOULD be up-to-date as the scanner was just released a short time ago. (maybe a month?)...

The site said that to use the Scangear driver for this scanner, one had to have Adobe Photoshop 7.0 installed ("to use this plug-in")...I have this Photoshop version (not installed yet because I just got my computer built) but can anyone tell me how installing the photoshop would make my scanner driver work? What's the connection?

Your scanner has a adapter that plugs into the electricity right? Therefore, it has constant power. This is true for any Adapter AC type peripheral. Two ways around this. Either unplug it everyday or get a power strip. Your computer only shuts itself off, not all the other devices connected to it. I have master router(terminology?) that I place under my monitor and I shut off all my devices with one flip of a switch when I'm done 'puting. Not only did my scanner have constant power but so did my DSL modem, printer, Maxtor USB drive, and my Cambridge soundsystem. Did I hear someone say increased electricity bills? Yes. And, if you leave them on and get a electrical spike you could lose them forever. Hence the creation of surge protectors which are normally installed in these power strips. Unfortunately, I learned my lesson the first time the hard way. Also, just turning off your computer won't protect you if you get a major spike.

Thanks Cognito Too! Am I understanding correctly here...your 'master router' is the same as the 'power strip' you're talking about? And one more question...about how much $$$ is this piece of equipment? Sounds great to be able to shut off everything with one 'flip of a switch'!

On my scanner, in the configuration menu, there is an option to turn off the scanner when you exit the program.

Synco, you can get one of those for about $20 US. Most of them come with a surge protector for modem and AC plugs built in. I wish I could remember the exact name of it, but they come with a master switch and individual switches for each component. Like I said, I just plug everything from my computer into it. Most of them have switches labelled; master, computer, monitor, printer, Aux1, Aux2, etc... They are thin boxes with front switch access and everything plugs into the back of them. Therefore for example, you don't have to keep burning your printer just because your computer is on. Most computer stores will have them. The surge protectors are the same idea with multiple outlets and some of them offer free $20,000 US insurance against loss due to electrical damage with purchase of the unit. But, they are normally placed on the floor and are harder to access. Unless your monitor plugs into your computer, it will be on 24 hours a day. If you notice the light on it won't go out either even if you turn off the computer. One of these boxes sounds like the cure for you. Good Luck.

Hey Cognito Too...thanks for the info. While I have you 'on the line' so to speak...can you tell me why the driver had a note that said 'to use this plugin' one must have Adobe photoshop 7 installed?... What would be the 'connection'? How would this work, and why would one need Adobe photoshop to have a scanner driver work properly? Mmm...??? And yes...I love the idea of the master control thingy you've told me about here. Sounds great.

the word "plugin" is the give away, it is a scanning solution that is Photoshop 7 specific I would guess, another waods it is a addon for Photoshop..

You should have a power strip with a switched (fusable link) set of sockets to plug yur computer equip into. I would suggest an APC UOS with Surge protection...

I appreciate the tips, here...I didn't know about a 'master' 'power strip', and it DOES sound like something I really ought to have (like you guys have recommended). I have some nice equipment, and realize now how I can protect it much more thoroughly! Thanks. And about the 'plugin' that I wrote about above...would Canon (which is the scanner I have) have some sort of 'deal' with Adobe Photoshop, then? Affiliated in some way? THIS thing is obviously really bugging me. I've never seen or installed a driver that tells you that for it to work properly you have to have anything else (much less Photoshop 7) installed!

I think the TWAIN driver of the scanner will just work with every graphics program. The plugin maybe a seperate add-on to use with PS7. I have a CanoScan 670U myself, and it works like a charm with all other graphics progs. But it gets its power from USB only, so it is off when the computer is off.
