Explorer Crashes and Fences Disabled ...<Partial Solution>

I started getting issues after the latest Windows Update.  (Running Windows 10 Version 1709)

Fences would crash explorer and disable, any time I tried to renable, it would crash and disable.

I tried purging and clean installation on newest version.

I do not have Forcepoint or Websense running.

I tried a clean boot and installing under and new local admin account, still not change in behavior.

Solution:  After reading another post, I turned off the desktop background slide show (Windows built in feature.)  If I choose a static image or a solid color, Fences works without issue.

I hope the Stardock team can use this information to fix this issue which just started showing up with latest Windows 10 build so I Can go back to my slideshow backgrounds.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I am sorry, but Windows 10 latest update is v1809 (OS Build 17763.195). Could you check again what version is on your system. Please use Winver.exe for a better listing of OS build numbers.

Thank you.

Please try the following:

-For Win8/10 Users: Open the Start Screen, and type 'cmd'. Right-click on the search result and select 'Run as administrator' from below.

-Type: sfc /scannow

-Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes)

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

If the SFC finds errors, but cannot fix them, please also run the following command in the same command prompt window:

dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Some help on how this looks should you need it:

The above command should assist with replacing any damaged or problematic system files. Please note, however, since it may require restoring certain files, this process can take some time and you will need to be patient until it has completed.

Please let me know whether this resolves your problem or if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Any reason why you not updating your Windows 10 to 1809? We have no problem running slideshow with Fences running on our Windows 10 1809.

Thank you,

Fences has worked with 1709 and desktop slide show, it stopped working with those latest windows updates.

You can always uninstall those updates. Just saying but FWIW upgrading to 1809 will solve a lot of issues particularly with 1709 thru 1804.

Did you ever end up updating Win10 to the latest 1809?

I also tried resetting/reinstalling Windows (using the "Keep My Files" option), but I still have the issue.  I'm completely at a loss as to what is causing it.

I use Fences (v2) on my home PC without issues.  I also used Fences on my previous Win7 work laptop, again with no issues. Very strange. mobdro

I have updated to 1809 and the problem still exists with same limited work around.

Double checked and no force point or websense installed.

Any additional thoughts?

Something else to check....

I installed Fences on a newly-imaged Win10 laptop with no problems.

The next day I installed Start10, and explorer started to restart randomly, disabling Fences.

I uninstalled Start10 and the problem is gone.
