Multi Monitor Restoration

I saw some topics related to multi monitor support and while this issue might be related, none of the ones I saw mentioned the problem I'm having.

The problem is that every now and then all fences jump over to my main monitor, leaving my secondary monitor empty. Not that big of a problem as you'd think I could just restore it from a snapshot, right? Well, not really. That's a bit like a lottery, as it only sometimes restores them properly. I've tried moving the appropriate fences to the secondary monitor and then attempt to restore again, only to be confronted with a once again empty secondary monitor and a primary monitor with an excess of fences.

With my slight OCD, I cannot just ignore the problem and carefully putting them all in exactly the right place takes quite a while. So much so that after having had this problem for as long as I can remember, I've finally reached the point where I have to change something for the sake of my sanity. Is there a way restoration could be fixed or a workaround I could use to restore my fences? I'm getting really close to getting rid of it entirely, which is something I'd really rather not do.

Reluctantly I have to agree that Fences does have sub-standard quality control. I have experienced the overlapping of icons when there is multiple rows if icons in a fence and the issue of restoring the icon to a multiple desktop. I presume that Stardock is aware of these issues. I hesitate to acquire more of their software until these issues are resolved.

I've had this problem, too. 3 monitors on my main GPU and 1 on the onboard GPU.

I think the culprit is the way Windows enumerates displays, which doesn't always match the GPU driver's enumeration. On top of that, they might have different ways of marking a display disconnected vs asleep (2 of my displays are technically TVs, 1 which doesn't have a sleep mode).

I would recommend saving several different snapshots - after a fresh boot, when the problem appears, once you fix the problem, and once a while after you've used the system a while (plus once after connecting/disconnecting any other displays). Then you can try each snapshot to see if any work. Figure out which works and put shortcuts to those layouts somewhere convenient.

Now, if they could fix the folder portal icons being offset, that would help me stop twitching.

My experience has been that if I immediately restart the computer from the start menu, the multi-monitor system layout will return to normal.  I presume that there is a monitor/device enumeration issue and even restoring from a snapshot until this enumeration issue has been "reset" with a restart won't help.

The good news is that everything should be in all the right places when you restart, so perhaps that's worth the 30 seconds or so it takes to get back to where you were?

I hope that helps.

I'm having a similar problem using a surface pro 3.

I have a mulit monitor set up. So when I have my fences set up for multi monitor I take a snap shot.

When I have my fences set up for the Surface screen only I take a snapshot.

However whenever I switch beteen multi monitor & solo screen my fences never jump back to the places they last were, their always off, sometimes piled over each over sometimes just in the wrong position.

I've tried the various Layout Auto Adjustment options but nothing corrects the problem.

Any ideas please?

This is what we have on the subject:

As noted by others, having Multiple snapshots for different scenarios is the most common solution.
