Phew I was REALLY concerned my orange glasses hid those WC dl stats...The difference is stunning though...over a 1000

I now see why Shmoopy was upset...if Admins can only see those stats it does look a bit funky. I'm still unclear about all those downloads that aren't from WC...who's hot linking? I know Shmoopy sure didn't do any hot linking and it was just uped yesterday so there wouldn't be much of a chance of some site hot linking to it...guess this external downloading is a bit confusing to me.

Phooey...it's not external downloading as such, just a calculation method, which is a secret at the moment as different methods are being appraised. I assume that when one method is decided upon, the information will be available to all.

Then what you are saying is the system is still experimental and there is nothing written in stone that can be explained. Soo...things may change from day to day until something is decided on. I guess I must have misunderstood when it was said it was all explained in messages posted earlier. I think that clears it up for me for the moment!..or maybe not

Maybe I shouldn't say anything...I don't want to lose it, but I can see those stats. Column heading links on all of those areas are hot.

Yeesh. Sorry I said anything. I know, too late for that! It's all just very confusing to me and I got upset because it seemed unfair. I still don't understand why Lullaby didn't show up in the Top Downloads some little place at all unless only a max of 2 skins from each category are shown there?

I also didn't hotlink to my own skin and I only downloaded my own skin once to check that the download worked since someone wrote on my skin that she couldn't get it to work so I tried it and when it worked okay I told her how to get it to download right.

Anyway, I apologize for getting upset over something that is just a waste of everyone's time and energy.

BTW I don't belong in Top Authors with only 2 skins here. But that will change soon enough.

Ah, that's good to hear shmoop. Anyway, you are too hooked on this skinning I bet. I have never been in the top d/l and never been in the top authors. That's because I share what I made with pleasure and am not really interested in the status of popularity. That's another category where too many people make too many similar look alikes (my opinion..flame me for that if someone feels the need). As you say in your skin comment, if you make one person happy with your WB, you have succeeded. I think you have made more than one happy...I'd say keep on skinning and feel the pleasure of seeing your own creativity coming to life

Yes, adni, you are correct, all of us make up the wincustomize web-site. But it belongs to the admins.

Also, why should the vocal minority (the small handful of skinners who are actually active on the message board) make the decision for those of us who do not participate as much on the message board because we are busy with other things? The fact is, most of us are quite happy with the system, because we know that the admins are doing their best to create a fair environment for all of us skinners.

Hi Alexandrie, I didn't saw anyone crying. Crying or not, you sould be in the Top Authors list because you are one of the Best, no doubt about it, but I guess this not the case now. Is it?

Since day One of the creation of the 'Top Authors' listing...and watching its virtual stagnation with barely any change at all, I have longed for a shake-up to see greater transience and life to the listing.

I personally couldn't decide whether the 'stasis' was down to a poor accounting system or premeditated or deliberate 'cheating'.

It was very likely a bit of both.  If one author had a million skins to choose from he/she would naturally stagnate on the list while the less prolific but perhaps more popular would not get a look-see.

Then there was the time a WinAMP skin leapt into the top downloads...even though it was below average in quality and quite old as well...clearly being linked to from off-site...and having absolutely no bearing on what was actually 'popular' to the Wincustomize members at all.

Since I care 100% of nothing whether my works ever made it into any of these lists or not, I have no personal interest in the ranking method, apart from the fact that I care for an equitable system for ALL skinners and artists who are valued members of this site, and not just the extremely prolific, or those who perhaps find ways and means to synthetically cook the books.

I like the way a 'big-time' skinner/artist like Adni18 can be up there on the same list as a relative new-comer like Shmoopy.

It is no longer a who's who of skinning, but a who's currently doing good stuff in skinning.....and THAT is a Good Thing[tm].....

LeCrayon you are one of the tops in my book and thank you for your kind and supportive words.

I agree with you wholeheartedly in that I’d rather spend 3 weeks on one skin that I put a lot of love and heart into rather than pumping out a bunch of clones. That would feel like having the creative wind knocked out of me if I wasn’t true to myself artistically.

NOW, one last thing on the download counts…I thought that with the new system that people weren’t able to ‘bloat’ download scores but a little Sherlock-thinking brings me to the conclusion that THIS must have been the case with my skin then since I don’t see how such a new skin could have been hotlinked by anyone but ME and I didn’t and it would be easy enough to see by looking at the origin of downloads in the WC stats that the Admins have access to that I most certainly DIDN’T hotlink my skin.

Soooo, if that IS the case and someone/someones WAS/WERE trying to purposely UP my download score (why on earth they’d do that leaves me to ponder the conscience of such a person) then I must ask you whoever you are to please NEVER do that for or TO ANY author. WHY?

1). It’s not fair to the AUTHOR! I don’t want ‘false’ downloads. What on earth does that do for me except confuse the heck out of me and then I end up thinking I got ‘dissed’ and my desire for fairness kicks in and I get upset and for what? I’d rather have ONE HONEST download than 10 fake ones! So don’t do ME or ANY other authors any favors by clicking on the download button more than ONCE unless your download didn’t work the first time.
2). It’s also not fair to OTHER AUTHORS. Cheating for ONE author cheats all the OTHER AUTHORS! THAT is an obvious one.
3). The best way to truly show your appreciation to an author is to leave a constructive or kind comment since many authors appreciate help/comments just as much if not MORE than downloads.

Sorry, I just don’t know what else to conclude since there couldn’t have been hotlinking and if 100+ downloads of mine were nullified from counting in the Top Downloads then I must assume those were dishonest in some way which is just as depressing to me. I guess I can’t even trust any numbers now that I see until stuff gets worked out…
