London has again been struck with tragedy and the sad loss of life.  Words cannot describe how I feel right now, but my heart goes out to all those affected by this horrible fire.

Hope and prayers to those survivors battling injuries, and to those who lost loved ones, may they receive all the love and support the community can give.

I heard one comment made by a reporter that it began when someone's refrigerator caught fire. For some reason it didn't sound right. My thoughts and prayers to all Londoners affected by this tragedy.

I imagine there will be various theories as to how the blaze started, but none of them will help those affected and it would be so much better to leave the cause to the relevant authorities to figure out.  The best thing anyone in London/the UK can do right now, rather than speculate, is to focus their energies on positive things to help those affected and in need.

Ya know, people here come out of the woodwork with outpourings of grief about movie stars and rock stars who kicked the bucket, and that fechen saddens me when just two people spent a moment to comment here on a real tragedy.  No grief from elsewhere, nothing!

Yup, it's tragic if some actor dies of old age, or a rock star fucks themselves over with a drug/alcohol overdose, but when the world loses mothers, fathers and children is a tragedy such as this, there's little or NO outpouring of grief, not even a sense of lose.

How sad! Our priorities are somewhat fucked up IMO.

Anyhow, I'm struggling to weigh all that up, along with other things, and I'm out of here.  Perhaps even permanently!

Yes, 58 (non famous) people and barely a whimper. Very sad all round.

Don't really know what to say right now but here in the UK (I,m about 250 miles away from London, in Liverpool) its becoming more and more apparent that the cause of this fire is cost cutting by local and national government. The cladding applied to the outside of this tower in order to "upgrade" it does not seem to have been properly fire resistant and fueled the flames after the fire started on the second floor. Please all you Americans and other nationality members, google Grenfell Towers and see the devastation that not doing a job properly and miserly politicians can cause. I'm sure I speak for all Brits when I  say we  appreciate all your kind thoughts . Dont let your Government cut cost on building safety wherever you may live in the world. The death toll is expected to rise to as many as 70. That,s 70 men women and children, one of them only 6 months old who are now gone leaving grieving parents, widows orphans and friends and all because someone wanted to cut corners and save a few quid. Is it any wonder people get depressed when the world we live in is being run by self indulgent maggots commonly known as politicians.

Referring to my post above after reading it over I think maybe I should add that I don,t believe ALL politicians are bad or maggots. Just the really powerful ones

On fb there have been many, many expressions of sympathy regarding this (probably preventable) tragedy. These poor souls had no real chance of escape...warnings and concerns went unheeded. Simply dreadful. Would have made my feelings known sooner but just got back from 3 long flights.

... and now the sad stories of the final phone calls are coming to light putting an even more personal stamp on the tragedy... incredible that this could happen in this day and age... and it seems thousands of high rise apartments in Sydney and across Australia have the same combustible cladding as the London building so Oz will be speedily identify and figuring out what to do with them... apparently the cladding has a plastic core... it went up like a dry Christmas tree...

you'd think cherry pickers could have helped pluck some people hanging out of windows or something.. or those huge blow up mattress thingimees...  :-|

sad to think many of these people have fled from their own dangerous countries to end up dying like this...  :(

What is really sad is that this avoidable tragedy makes major headlines but an explosion outside of a Chinese kindergarten, killing seven and injuring twenty odd people, goes practically unnoticed except for a small article on yahoo news. Thoughts and prayers should go out to them as well, mine do. They are no less deserving. Innocents lose their lives and nobody gives a damn.

Rant over

That's why I usually don't comment on tragic events (disasters, terror attacks etc.).

In Iraq, Libya or Syria this would be "a strike" with civilian casualties. No disrespect, just showing you how skewed mainstream media is.

Ain't nothing new.

Back when I started in Architecture this was still 'relevant' and headless chooks were scurrying..... and it wasn't the last.

Now modern building standards of self-certification and deemed-to-comply simply mean if you ever get the notion to invest in High-rise residential Real Estate....don't.

This latest one in the UK was past its use-by date and renovation shouldn't have been an option.

Perspective....

Sometimes you simply can't keep responding [publicly] to every incident.

Latest is 62 dead in bushfires in Portugal.

Another one in London today. Man drives into muslim worshippers outside a mosque.

This is a very broken world we live in. Nuking the whole effin planet is probably the only way to cure it.

Sadly, it is far more broken than we sometimes realise.  Those atrocities and tragedies that hit the mainstream news bulletins only scratch the surface of just how evil some of mankind has become.

Unfortunately, nuking the planet would unlikely solve anything.  What rose from the ashes would have learned nothing and the whole process would begin again.
