Windows Explorer crashes because of Fences

Windows Explorer crashes because of Fences

After installing Fences 3.03 on Windows 10, every time while showing the desktop (by using Win+D or pressing show desktop button), Windows explorer crashes and then restarts.

We could observe the desktop is re-drawn and sometime there will be a dialog saying Fences cannot be loaded.

After uninstalling Fences, everything goes fine...

Does anyone know how to fix it?

So is there a path forward to fix Explorer crashes for Forcepoint/Websence users?

I remember that a year or so ago sdRohan was implying that the fix is just a matter of time, but time passes and not much is happening.

So what to expect?

I've been having Explorer crashes for close to a year related to Fences. Two different corporate lap tops. Both have had the purge performed. One was a brand new PC with a fresh install of Windows and Fences. I'm running Fences 3.09 but I tried rolling back to 2.0 and this was an issue with both. Our company does not use Websense or ForcePoint. Explorer would crash when I used Win+D, when dragging something to the lower right corner to the "show desktop button" (same functionality as Win+D), when snapping windows or documents to the side of the screen to go split screen with two items, and when I used remote access services I could not drag/drop from the remote PC to my desktop. Removing Fences fixed all these issues.

I've changed my background to a solid color and the snapping, and remote desktop issues are fixed. The show desktop functionality still crashes explorer using Win+D or the show desktop button in the lower right hand corner.

I'm running Windows 10.0.18362 Build 18362 but this issue has been happening over several iterations of Windows.

Hi Basj,

Same as when I show desktop. Screen goes black and boot back after 5-10 seconds. No I don't think I have Forcepoint installed.

Thanks,

Nick

Really need to know if you have or not Forcepoint installed. If not have you tried the the Clean boot steps mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

These steps is to see if there is conflicting program running in the background in your system.

Please try it and report back.

Is this a PC in a corporate environment?  If so, could you ask your IT people if WebSense / ForcePoint is being used?  If not, what AV app is being used?

Good Afternoon,

I have recently installed Fences onto my enterprise laptop running Windows 10 1903 and am experiencing the same issue.

I can confirm that I am running the Forcepoint one Endpoint - Version 19.03.823. I am also running Symantec Antivirus (SEP 14.0 RU1 MP1).

I have updated the Forcepoint Endpoint to version 19.08.4131 and still getting the explorer crashes.

Are there any logs i can provide for troubleshooting?

From what I understand, Fences never work properly on System with Forcepoint installed. Somehow, Forcepoint is blocking Fences. As Forcepoint is a security type software it is best to set Forcepoint so it will allow Fences to work. I don't think there is anything Fences can do to go around this issue. It best for user or their company IT guy to configure the Forcepoint.

Thank you,

I also encountered with same problem. As I search for the problem there are many suggestions but none of it  worked for me. You may visit https://ebizzing.com/ site.. You might get more related information on this.

I am having the same problem with Fences 3  "Explorer was not closed properly" .  I am not in a corporate environment and am not running any of the software that you've been saying causes the problem (Forcepoint, etc).   I have a simple laptop with Windows 10 and Fences 3. It worked for several weeks since I installed it and just today starts getting the error.  I tried the restart, reinstall, etc forum suggestions and nothing works. My antivirus is simply the one Windows 10 came with. I have (and I am the admin of my simple PC) not changed my antivirus or any programs in the 3 weeks that Fences worked for me. The problem started when I clicked on (tried to open) a file in one of my fences. The program did not start and the screen went black and started looping me thru the error message, re-enable fences sequence.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try the purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Just make sure to reboot after the purge. and reinstall Fences again using the latest installer from your account. Reboot again after that. Retest it and report back.

I'm facing the exact same situation as greenmd13 in reply #77
For ease I'm using his words:

I'm running Windows 10 Version 1709 Build 16299.1217 but this issue has been happening over several iterations of Windows.

When getting the new notebook and having the same problem again, I was at the point of dropping Fences for this issue, but since I found this thread, I regained hope that someone will finally fix this.

Did this ever get fixed? I'm having the same issue. Still in 2021 on 3 different PCs all windows 10. I did open a ticket and they told me that support for bugs is only delivered via forums... odd. this is clearly a bug that needs development attention. Is there a jiras tracking number for this yet?
