Windows Explorer crashes because of Fences

After installing Fences 3.03 on Windows 10, every time while showing the desktop (by using Win+D or pressing show desktop button), Windows explorer crashes and then restarts.

We could observe the desktop is re-drawn and sometime there will be a dialog saying Fences cannot be loaded.

After uninstalling Fences, everything goes fine...

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Any news on this issue?

I have the same problem on my new PC with Windows 10. When I disable Fences the "Show Desktop" command works without problem. With Fences enabled Windows Explorer crashes.

What version of Fences are you using?  This should not be happening with 3.05 (current version)

Hello Stardock.

I have recently installed 3.0.5.12 as this crashes explorer when using the win+d command to show the desk top.

Please fix

Dave

Hello,

I've reported the bug.  What's happening then?

I have this issue as well, with most recent version of Fences (3.0.5.12). I contacted support and provided the requested data file, etc. Here's what I got back a week ago:

Hello,
I have forwarded your report to our Development Team for their review and recommendations.
I cannot, however, provide a timeline for a response or resolution. You will be notified when one is available.
We really do appreciate your feedback, thanks.

I have the same problem.  However, I'm on Windows 7.  Fences 3.0.5.12.

The problem only happens when I bring the laptop out of Sleep Mode and it happens randomly.  When it does happen, I have to disable Fences and then close (kill) Explorer to resolve he issue.

If then re-enable Fences, the problem appears immediately.  I have to reboot before enabling Fences again.

I did try a re-install of the software, but that did not help.  I going to start doing power downs rather than sleep mode and see if I can avoid the issue until a fix is found.

Well, it has been 2 months since I purchased Fences 3.0.  Regretting it.  Still no fix for the Windows Explorer stop working issue.

I have now uninstalled Fences 3.0 (wish I could get my money back) and installed Fences 1.0.  At least the older product works.  :(

I have also uninstalled Fences 3 due to this fault with the product, I will be attempting a full refund until such times as Stardock pull their finger out and fix it.

I'm not paying for something that doesn't work.

Never understood why software vendors expect people to put up with software that DOES NOT WORK!

If I bought toaster and it didn't work as stated, straight back to the shop for a refund :typo:  :typo:  :typo:  :typo:  :typo:

Not the perfect analogy, although the fault/issue can be real.

To be closer to the mark re your analogy....the toaster  doesn't work when you plug it in...but if you take it next door and try it there it does work.

And when that happens you start to question your power point rather than the toaster.

And yes, I know....the toaster is still not working [for you].

Contacting Support directly is the equivalent of having a toaster store tech come out to your place and check your wiring with regards to the toaster's use....;)

That is a shame - I would have worked with you on it...

What I have seen recently (and its still a mystery why) is that if you change your desktop(s) to a solid color, it stops.  I can theorize why but its just a guess atm.

Also, some who run 'Websense' have seen it as it want to scan the Win Explorer process where Fences exists and its unhappy about it.  That is more for corp users, however.

I do not run Websense.  Not willing to set my background to a plain color to satisfy the undocumented requirements of the tool.  I will just wait until there is a fix before installing 3.0 again.  Until then, will continue to run 1.0.

Hiya ,

I am having exactly the issue you mentioned, Websense + Fences. Have you heard of any solution yet? We really want to deploy it like fences 2 on Windows7 , but having a really tough time at the moment.

Thanks
Kelvin

Hi

Bought Fences a few months ago and in the beginning all was well.

Now i get, almost the same error as everyone else here.

Mine differs a bit though.

The computer i am running it on is a company laptop, that is part of the domain.

If i start the computer while at work (And on domain) everything works fine (Almost, i have dual screen and even though i ticked "one setup pr. screen resolution" it sometimes fucks up).

If i have the computer in sleep and wake it up at home, everything works fine.

BUT....If the computer is off, and i start it up, somewhere, it can not access the domain, the computer will start but nothing on the desktop works, and if i click any icon, the screen is made whiter and explorer crashes. After doing this 3-5 times fences will detect that there is a problem and ask if i want to disable it.

If i answer yes, my machine is instantly usable....Minus fences.

Fences was not a very expensive program, but i still feel that it's a shame that i paid for something that does not work.

You might want to get with your IT people and ask if:

-You are using WebSense

-If your work network is using 'Folder Redirection'

Hi, any update on this?  I'm having the same issue - also tried installing Fences 2.0 but that didn't work either.

Changed my desktop background to solid color but no luck there.  It is a corporate laptop, but don't think we're running websense.

thanks

It would be prudent to ask your IT people.

Been using fences for years and today whenever I enable fences windows explorer crashes and fences disables itself. What's going on?

even if windows isn't open, when I enable fences my screen flashes 3 times, then get a message that Fences has been disable because windows did not close correctly???
