What is supposed to happen when ships with "one of" components are upgraded

First off, I love the new components added in with 1.85 and the DLC. As my question asks though what is supposed to happen when I upgrade a ship with a precursor component? I had a beefed up survey ship with the precursor sensor that gives 54 power as well as the engine component and when I upgraded it I lost all the components, they show up in the ship designer but when i try to install them on another ship I get the message that says they can only be used on one ship.

Is this the expected behavior? I would have liked to be able to keep recycling them into more and more powerful ships as my tech advances but if this is the expected behavior I guess I will have to reserve their use for the later part of the game when huge hulls have been researched.

Once you fit these 'specials' on a ship, that's it, you can't transfer them to another ship. All you can do is upgrade the ship they're fitted to, so yes, it pays to be patient and pick the time (and hull size) to deploy them on.

Quoting Space Cadet Stimpy: All you can do is upgrade the ship they're fitted to

That is the crux of my problem, when I upgraded the ship the components were on, they disappeared. The new ship does not have them. They show up in the designer, I can design a new ship with them but I cannot build that ship in a shipyard or choose it as an upgrade version even for the ship that currently has the component. And yes, they are the same class.. I tried creating an upgraded ship with the parts but it does not show up in the upgrade choices, the upgraded ship shows as available in the designer but is shaded out in the shipyard menus and "You can only build one ship with component X" pops up. I deleted the original ship to see what would happen but no luck building the new one.

So, I am starting to believe that "only on one ship" may mean exactly that. That ship is it, now and forever. Better make it count because upgrades are not an option either. And if you try to upgrade the ship, the component is lost forever. Not sure if that was the intent or a bug or even just something weird with my version but right now choosing the planet based version during the ideological choice becomes the only real option unless I want to wait a long time since those precursor parts tend to show up on the first ten planets.

If you destroy the ship you had it on it should re appear back in your inventory. I have not tried this yet. I also wonder what happens when you sell the ship to another faction....

I fitted a special radio to my car, then later on i had the engine and gearbox upgraded, and funnily enough, the special radio did not disappear??? Weird huh?

Just like smartphones, no one actually upgrades spaceships anymore.  That's too old school.  The vendors just teleport you new ones straight from the shipyard and teleport the old ship back.  It's a lot cheaper for them that way, not that it costs you any less.  If you have a one of a kind ship, then you have a one of a kind problem and this modern day "upgrade" system isn't going to do you any good.  We just don't have the replacement parts to make that happen.  Now, don't you wish your smartphone had individual upgrade-able components?  Maybe not.

I destroyed my ship with the special components and built them on a different ship...so that at least works.

can you confirm that the special components are not installed on another ship somewhere else?

did you upgrade your ship to one without those components installed?

i know that at one point there was a bit of a bug where if you had a unique component installed on a ship you couldn't upgrade that ship because you technically had that component installed on a ship.
