SARS - Ack!

Alright, so I can be found hugging my knees in a corner if there is word of a spider in the house, but this SARS thing is scaring me...

A friend of mine along with his family have been quarenteened, and another friend of mine was hanging out with the potentially-infected friend... Should I be worried sick like I am, or just relax?

I hear it kills about 5% of those infected, but does it kill random people, or just the young, old and/or weak?

The fear keeps me awake...

What in the heck are you talking about? SARS? Is that a new store chain like SEARS?

Fear is your greatest enemy, but do take precautions. If you notice anything like a cold or flu get to an emergency room right away. But don't lose sleep over something that may or may not happen.

It is a new virus? coming out of Asia and spreading. They have not found a cure, though some people recover many do not.

...um flu-like or pneumonia like, contagious...

More like a new kind of tuberculosis, from what I understand. Could be wrong though.

CNN article on SARS here: http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/03/29/mystery.illness/index.html

The page also has links to the CDC and WHO

I haven't had a lot of time to look into it, but I have been worried about it since I heard about it a couple of weeks ago.

What I can't seem to find out is whether the people who have it and *haven't* died get better, or are they still being treated and continue to have the disease?

I've not really read anything about anyone kicking the illness and going on with their lives. Anyone know?

less then 5% die from sars the mortality rate of an influenza out break is greater... mostly the issue with sars is the apparent ease of spreading. those that fight the illness off are better in 7 to 10 days and are no longer contagious.

Well, at least you can overcome it, then.

They talked a lot about the disease in what I read, but not so much about the survivors. I have a 6 year old and my wife works in a hospital. I have a chronic illness myself, I take Immunosuppressants, and I visit the hospital fairly often too. , my ears tend to prick up when something nasty and contagious goes around.

'Life' is the only truly 100% fatal disease....and it's transmitted sexually...

Yeah, sars, I know it, only by the war it dasn't get attention.
Its already half around the world. If you did hang with people who are infectet, I should go to the hospital.
Only if it was to be sure...

thanks yrag, both your links were very helpful.

The reason everyone is worried about it is because it appears to be a new kind of disease. And if memory serves me right, the guy that first diagnosed it recently died from it himself.

I'm still alive and may still be tomorrow, that's all I can ask for... and yes, that is all that I ask..
anyone wanting the last twenty probably health problem ridden years of my life have only to ask.... you are welcome to them.
I'm too old to die young and leave a good looking corpse, but I'm not a whole lot past that point.... yeah, that's right... I'm planning a raffel...

Reporting from Toronto which seems to be the hotbed of SARS at the moment. We have had 4 recent deaths and we are on medical emergency here. Two hospitals are down and other operating on strict restrictions.
