Are people affraid to leave negative comments? And should the bar be raised?

I've been browsing the WindowBlinds skins for a while now, and have noticed that a good amount of them are very poorly done. The previews reveal graphical and alignment errors galore, and yet somehow they were still added to the collection. What struck me as odd were the comments on these skins. They were all positive about them as a parent is to her 2 year old child about his/her drawing of a house and a tree (which I can understand; he or she is 2 years old).

I have seen skins which almost appear to be farces. As if to step as close the line as possible before the Wincustomize skin-approving dudes just have to say "there's no way in heck this can be added to the WB skin library..."

So what is it? Are people afraid to tell these authors that they need to practice more, and ask them NOT to post every piece of work they create in the process?

I just find it strange that the skins aren't compared against the same standards as the wallpapers. I've had a few wallpapers rejected before, and I believed them to be far less unattractive than many of the skins which made it through the overly-porous sifter.

So does anyone agree that the bar should be raised for WB skins?

Nice comment sweetie. If you don't like our 'junky crap' perhaps you would be happier elsewhere? I'm sure we can arrange something...

I'm not suggesting they stop. I just thought it would make sense to wait until they've developed more as skinners before submitting their works.

That only goes for those incomplete skins though. One of the ones I pointed out (the trippy rainbow one) was well skinned, but I just didn't like the colours. Nothing wrong with posting those because lots of people love those skins.

spikehare11 change your attitude or go elsewhere.
Either that, or your departure can be assisted.

If people wish to give constructive in-depth criticism on a skin, that might actually help the author make better skins,be my guest. But if someone thinks a one word negative comment about a skin is of any help to an author their sadly mistaken.A one word positive comment is great!People who leave short meaningless negative comments are just trying to cause trouble.
I say to these people put in the time to make a skin and see how you feel when you get a negative meaningless comment on it.

In response to the following comments:

"But for the life of me I can not figure out why it is that people feel so oppressed and still want to login?"

i think alot of us hate authority so we love to see how far we can push it. Myself, I like nothing more than watching others push it and get exiled. If you read my previous post in this thread here is a good example of if you do not have the same opinion or attitude of the admins your screwed:

"spikehare11 change your attitude or go elsewhere.
Either that, or your departure can be assisted."

Not that it all bothers me but it seems like a dictatorship site. I only have problems with a few people and I have choosen to shut up about the problems.

No offense meant in this post to ANYONE. It is just a opinion of mine.

kona0195, "i think your skins SUCK, to all u people who post junky crap, stop now".

To paraphrase, perhaps you now see a motive for requesting an attitude change.

The admins are charged with the duty of maintaining equilibrium amongst a diverse group of people, a potentially huge group, and none of us wants to see decorum swept out the door in the name of free, anarchic interaction as is endemic on many other sites.

Skinners provide their works here freely for display and download and use.
They do NOT need, nor deserve asinine commentary from the peanut gallery.

If someone doesn't like [some of] the skins, ignore them and be grateful for the others, or just plain GO ELSEWHERE.

Simple, really...

The 'opinion or attitude' of the admins is a desire for mutual respect and common decency, combined with a modicum of patience.

You are quite correct....differ or deviate from that and you WILL be screwed...

It's not a dictatorship. It's simply a matter of enforcing politeness and proper etiquette. What he said was simply "Those who cannot design skins yet, just stop trying to learn."

If that doesn't strike you as wrong, then both your attitudes need adjusting...

I've been voicing my opinion in this thread for 5 pages now, and despite the mods' disagreeing with me, I still haven't be threatened with a ban. Why? Because I do it politely and I back up my opinion as best I can.

Seems that some people could learn a thing or two from Aaron...

The admins do not tell you what to think.
They just request standards by which you 'must' behave if you wish to remain/be a valued member of this site and its community....

Hey I have no love for people who say that other peoples skins suck. I relize that alot of time and eneregy goes into every skin and wallpaper. I respect the admins here because this site is actully free from cussing and threatning and stuff like that. I don't envy their job. I want to become a well known skinner and this is the best place to start because everyone watches each others back. I was just trying to point out in my previous post that we people here are not 100% free to say what we really want to say in fear of retaliation. If that is what it takes for this site to remain as good as I have come to expect it is then I WELCOME the admins. That guy should not have said what he said.

Hey Jafo I caught a spelling mistake of YOURS: you misspelled my name. It's Kona0197 not 0195. i named myself after a bicycle company and old phone number.

I know the bike, but not your phone number, so forgive me...

Again, 'retaliation', or the threat of, is not something being held over you...unless you overstep the mark. Anyone found doing a 'Scott Sproat' will be quite joyfully ejected [exiled]. No problemo.
But he was hideously vile, and childish with it, as anyone targetted by him will attest.

Sometimes people get 'carried away' with the heat of the moment...a subtle reminder usually suffices.
Some may tend to make a career out of stretching the bounds...and get knuckles rapped. A few spit the proverbial and are marched out of town with their feet hardly touching the ground, quick-smart.
All in all, the site and its community benefits.
It's one little reason why so many DO like it here...

Every time I post a message, I am always consciously aware that there is a certain amount of monitoring that goes on and appreciate it. There can be misinterpretation of words sometimes, so it is converting to know there is always those words of wisdom and fairness out there to calm things down.
/me sometimes does not post messages for fear that *piranhas* will eat her alive.

dictatorship huh?

mm...

I've been mulling that one over for about an hour now and collectively find it very humorous and totally disconnected from the reality of this or any such website.

I mean, who owns and pays for the hardware? who pays for the bandwidth, who pays the payroll for the site employee's, who opens the site freely to peoples use, and also provides the option of membership with value added features for being a member? who asks the opinions of all users, guests and members alike, on many different topics which in the end will be used to held guide the direction of the site and even some of the different processes dealing with the actual commercial software, who makes sure that this site is here and ready for use 24 hours a day 7 day a week 52 weeks a year as best they can and as best as anyone can expect?

How in the world then, could the label Dictatorship ever be honestly applied to this site or the process of how it functions, the services it provides or they few guidelines of common respect which is expected for making use of it?

maybe I'm wackybobo, but as I said, it is almost laughable excluding the fact that it borders upon insulting to those who make this site exist in the first place.

anyway...

my new word for the day: platypus whatever you decide it is, Duck, Beaver(rodent), Mammal, it's alive...

oh and watch out for the venom...

wonder if they taste like chicken?

no I wouldn't harm one, just joking.
