Start Menu Width (Right-hand Panel)

I am running Start10 and WindowBlinds10 under Windows 10 Pro x64 (1511 - 10586.164) and I have a problem with the width of the right-hand panel in the Start menu.

Immediately after installation everything looks correct, but after a restart the width of the right-hand panel is reduced to about half of its normal size. For example: the line containing "Universal Applications" is reduced to "Universal Applica...".

I have tried reinstalling but to no effect. This appears to happen with almost any skin except Default theme (unsurprisingly).

However, I have also installed Start10 and WindowBlinds10 in a virtual machine under Hyper-V and this installation does not exhibit the same problem. I have checked the Start10 and WindowBlinds10 settings in the two installations and they are identical.

What else should I be looking at to correct this problem?

I had similar problems, but I reset dpi and text size back to default, now is okay.

I am running at 100% dpi (recommended) with unchanged text sizes. I tried setting the dpi to 125% and then back to 100%; no change.

Is your resolution set to native?

Also, try uncheck 'Use large icons':

Yes, the screen is set to 1920x1080, its native resolution, and I have set the Use large Icons off in Start10. The problem is not with the left-hand side of the start menu, but the right. I don't understand what changes when I reboot the machine. The start menu is perfect up to the time I reboot. I do not have fast start enabled.

Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it.

Hmmm...,

Maybe try a different theme.

I have tried different themes. All of them exhibit the same problem, all of them except the Default theme.

I was wrong in an earlier post where I said the problem doesn't occur in a virtual machine, it does occur there. Rebooting the VM causes the start menu to display the same reduced width right-hand side pane.

Seems to be intrinsic in Windows 10,

maybe make a custom link to Admin tools (1), as opposed to the default (2)

I'm sorry, but I don't see how setting up a new link to the admin tools will solve the problem of the right-hand panel width. Please explain your logic.

Doesn't solve it, it's just a work around. At least with a custom link, you can rename it what you wish.

See previous screenshot.

OK, I see. I don't have any problem using the start menu, I merely wanted to bring the problem to the attention of Stardock. There is sufficient width to be able to determine what each entry is. It just that some of them are cut off.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have discovered that if I go into Start10 configuration and select a non-WindowBlinds start menu, and then switch back to the WindowBlinds start menu, the right-hand panel is restored to its full size. Now to see if this is retained across a restart.

Edit: No, the corrected panel width is not retained across a restart. But going into Start10 configuration does set the width back to the full size, so it's a viable workaround but a PITA.

How about changing the theme in Start10 to use either the Win7 theme or the Modern theme. Does it still occur?

I'm hoping Neil will see this and advise you.

On my windows10 computer I'm using the same screen size as you with WB10 and Start10. Also using large icons but changing them to medium doesn't affect the WB. The startmenu is fine either way. Make sure large icons is checked also on Start10 under configure. I don't have your situation even using win7 skins but don't know what skins you are using.

Try my last uploaded skin which has a win10 sub style. I have checked with several people and all said it worked fine on win10 as it does here.

Also you can try this one from Lightstar which also works very well.

If you still have a problem there has to be something else causing your situation and like I mentioned hopefully Neil may have an answer for you.

Using the Start10 start menus works well. They display as they should.

The only skins I have tried using are the ones supplied with WindowBlinds10. While I haven't tried all of them, all of the ones I did try exhibited the same behaviour.

I have tried both skins suggested by DaveBax above, his own Flexability and LightStar's Reddish. With both of them I selected Windows 10 substyles. Both skins exhibit the same behaviour.

I am beginning to suspect that a program that runs at boot-time, i.e. at start-up, might be the cause. I am going to try disabling them in sequence to see if that corrects the problem.

Ok. All the skins that come with WB work fine wasn't sure you tried them all so suggested a couple of others. No doubt you have another situation causing this. Write SD support and let them know it happens with all skins and hopefully they may have an answer or suggestion.

I have opened a ticket with the support desk (#SHQ-277-40159).

Also, I had no joy disabling the various start-up programs.
