Win8 + Start8 -> Win10, broken Win10 Start Menu

Hi Folks,

I had Start8 installed before upgrading to Windows 10.  I removed Start8, but the built-in Windows 10 Start menu didn't work.

I installed and removed Start10, but the Start menu didn't come back.  I ran "purge_startall.bat", with no improvement.

I re-installed Start10.  When configured to show the Windows 10 menu when Windows key is pressed, it didn't do that.

Again I ran "purge_startall.bat".  I see the Windows Start button, but no menu appears when I click it or press the Windows key.

Is there some way to restore the functionality of the Windows 10 Start menu, with or without Start 10?

Thanks,

Bill

Unfortunately this does not sound like a Start8/Start10 problem.

Windows 10 upgrades are not always working out right and the OS seems to have a known bug with the Win10 menu not always working.  I hate to say it but a clean reinstall of the OS may be the way to go.  There is supposed to be a MS patch in testing but I do not know when they are releasing it.

I havea question regarding the start10 start button,

You have received the windows 10 start button error (the one where a dialog box that you cannot remove pops up and the windows start button fails to work, and Cortana fails to work.)

Can you still use start10 to access your programs?

At this stage I would like to know if I can bypass the windows 10 start button (which is failing me after numerous attempts at fixing it) and use Start10 to access my (large number of legacy) programs instead.

Please let me know if start10 has allowed you to do this

Should be able to yes.  We offer a 30 day trial to give it a go

Your answer is honest, but quite frightening. If I have to worry that the next time I do a Windows Update Start10 may crash so badly that I'll have to do a complete system restore, well, I'm not sure I'm willing to take that chance. Also, I installed Start 10 not long after I upgraded to Windows 10, and shortly thereafter Windows 10 crashed so badly I had to do a complete system restore. Now, I'm not saying this was the result of a Windows 10 Update or even that it was the fault of Start10, but hearing your answer makes me wonder.

I'm not going to ask for a refund for Start10, since (a) it's been over 6 months since I purchased it, and (b) it wasn't all that expensive in the first place. However, until I hear that Start10 is stable enough that I don't have to worry about doing system restores, I will reluctantly not install it. Too bad as it definitely fills a niche for those of us who hate the Windows 8/10 Start Menu.

On the good side, Fences is so great it is one of the very first things I install on my various computers. Absolutely 10 out of 10. Every time I show someone my laptop with Fences set up people ask me how to buy it. I should get a commission <g>.

I think you may have misunderstood things.

I am saying the issue reported in this thread is NOTHING to do with Start10 or Start8.  Windows 10 itself has known bugs with the OS start menu especially in the pre November update to Windows 10.  This is what you may have encountered and would happen with or without Start10.

Start10 is perfectly stable and has no known problems with causing problems needing system restores!
