Not Skin Related Linux?

Hey Guys How Are You?

Where would I find a good mandrake or redhat linux? (Full Version) I have tried in the past to install Linux but it never takes. Now that I have a good internet connection I would like to try it again. I hate Windows and all of Microsoft's BS.

You're on the wrong site then, aren't you?

Hating Windows and Microsoft and wanting Linux....bit of a slap in the face for all the people here creating skins/artwork specifically FOR that which you hate...

Hey Jafo I was not trying to make you angry. It is not the fact I hate windows, It is the fact of what happens every time I install windows on my machine. I do not like how it manages my memory or how it treats the system overall. I was NOT trying to make anyone mad and I am sorry.

My point is that I just wanted to try something new and easier than windows. I didn't realize so many people would yell at me or I would just have shut up. Sorry for this stupid thread.

thing is, well actually...

to much tech talk I guess isn't a good thing unless directly related to skinning issues and hardware, or gui apps and windows and the hardware...

um, what I mean to say, WinC isn't TechNet and I need to remind myself of that amoung other things

I will just stick to skinnig questions and not start any stupid threads unless it pertains to skining. Cool?

Who's yelling at you? Who is saying you can't skin Linux?

Easier than windows? I don't think so. Maybe as easy as windows, but not easier.

BTW, I don't think anybody's yelling at you. Everyone here appreciates varying opinions, but you make some bold statements from time-to-time.

It just seems everyone here is into Windows XP and that's cool. I have XP I am using it now (well I will be when I reinstall it. Had a virus. Had to reinstall XP but instead went for 98) What Jafo said through me off in post #1 I guess.

kona, it isn't just a single thread about linux really, or at least it doesn't seem to be for me. It's a number of threads that have been popping up more often such as the one on boosting federally funded wireless data communications links to a dorm room....

theres been others, but having been in that industry and dealing with government contracts and working with the different local FCC field offices I know just how dangerous just discussing that can be.

Today, a Federal judge gave John Ashcroft and the DOJ legal provincial right to take over by force if needs be, any domain and hardware linked to that domain seen as being criminal in nature. They did in fact take four sites today and have a list of others they are going after and turning all user information over to whom ever they deem could make best use of it, while also secretly investigating anyone they like with wire taps and credit history, etc... The net was censored today... probably ought to mark the callendar....

Ashy gets to pick and choose who he will claim needs arresting....

Wonder if he is going to get the power to remove citizenship including born Americans, like he wants while they are at this?

cleaning up the trash on the net is a good thing and the power to do so has been needed for a while, but given at what cost in the end?

kona: Linux certainly isn't easier than Windows. Cooler, yes. More flexible, yes. Faster, yes. Cheaper, yes. More stable, yes.

For example Red Hat 8 is made and designed to be very easy to use. It is, if you are just a casual user. But it certainly isn't simple if you want to dig deeper and try to customize it, or install new programs, or uninstall new programs, etc.

And NO, LInux does NOT support ANY Windows application. There is a program on Linux that's called WINE that will emulate Windows DLL's and the such, in order to be able to run most (about 95%) Windows applications. But let me tell you configuring WINE is not a piece of cake. And since you could easily harm your Windows partition by doing the wrong things, it is very recommended to read the manual carefully. And it's not light reading. I've been in the docs for more than a week now.

No, Linux isn't easier than Windows, especially when it comes to customization.

On the other hand, there are some awsome skins made for Linux as well. Except they're not here. This is WIN-customize.

I think I will keep my XP

Jafo: why is this site specifically for Windows? Winamp2 skins work without any problems with XMMS. 24-bit ICO files can be used in X and so can the PNGs for ObjectDock. wallpapers tend to work on most OSs

moshi....and the name of this site is.......?....

Moshi, thanks for the tip about Winamp skins working with XMMS. I have to give that a go. XMMS is the only player I use when in Linux.

Hey, you Linux users, what do you use for movies? MOV, AVI, MPG?
I use XMovie, but I don't like it much. Anything else you suggest?
I got Real Player installed, but unlike the Windows version, the Linux version doesn't seem to play just about anything.

As a Linux user dual booted with Windows, I find this thread funny in a good way. If it were not for Linux showing me what skinning is, I might not be here at WC. I like both and enjoy them as much. It is also nice to just restart and pick what you want to use for the day.
