Windows 10 Pro Compatibility vs. Fences v 2.13

Fences 2.13 kills Drag and Drop on Windows 10 final version (RTM)

Hello,

I installed the final version of Windows 10 Pro on my machine 2 days ago. While Fences v 2.13 apparently launched normally, I also lost the ability to Drag and Drop files on my desktop.

Symptoms:

  1. Fences initially loads and appears to be working normally. The problem becomes obvious once one attempts to drag and drop files in/out of any folder.
  2. When clicking on any file icon in preparation to Drag, the file appears "selected" as expected ...
  3. However, the moment I initiate a physical Drag of the selected file into a desktop based folder, the Windows 10 cursor shows a "not allowed" icon (international symbol of a circle with a diagonal line across it) and will not allow me to deposit the file I am dragging into/out of  a desktop folder.
  4. I tried dragging other files into other files on my desktop - all with the same negative result.

Only Known Interim solution:

  • I DISABLED Fences via Windows 10 Pro's Task Manager. This restored Windows Drag and Drop behaviors back to normal.
  • Obviously, this causes the loss of all Fence 2.13 settings and capabilities.

I really depend on Fences' features in my Daily work.

Please let me know when you develop a Windows 10 compatible version!

did you upgrade to windows 10, or do a clean install?

if you upgraded, did you have fences 2.13 installed on system in windows 8 before upgrading?

if so, I would suggest uninstalling, running a system cleaner, and rebooting

then reinstall fences 2.13

maybe that will help, upgrades of OS sometimes loose files required for operation.

cheers

Hi,

I have a clean install of Win 10 and reinstalled fences a couple of times but the problem still exists. Although I have the "Object Desktop Subscription", a popup appears saying "Your Fences license has expired. Please select one of the below options."

I activated by product key => "Thank you, Fences has been successfully activated" => Try to configure => "Your Fences license has expired."

I activated with stardock account => "Thank you, Fences has been successfully activated" => Try to configure => "Your Fences license has expired."

I even tried this with restarts after  activating. Any ideas?

I am also unable to drag and drop desktop icons that are not in a fence since I got Windows 10. I'll try reinstalling.

whats your definition of clean install.i remove all partitions even the recovery since windows ten makes a new recovery anyways. some people leave their recoveries but i dont take it in chance something follows behind from previous things

Hello, I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Window 10 yesterday and now I cannot move anything on my desktop as described by tiernito1 above.

Currently on Fences 2.01 and have no idea how to upgrade to 2.13??

Two questions would be:

1) How does one upgrade to the latest version?

2) Does anyone has a rough timeframe for when version 3 will be available?

You can download the latest version here: https://store.stardock.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=/myaccount/products

If your license says you need to activate after you've just activated, please delete the following file: License.sig

Does anyone know if a license for Fences 2 which I would buy today will be valid for a free upgrade to Fences 3? I'm interested in Fences, but I don't want to pay double if in some weeks V3 comes out.

WINDOWS 10 Pro Compatibility - August 11, 2015 UPDATE

I successfully installed Fences v 2.13 on a second PC where Windows 10 Pro had been installed from scratch on a clean disk. The good news is that it appears that all is working fine with Fences. I found no issues with Drag and Drop this time around.

Caveat: In a prior machine installation of Win 10 Pro, I DID experience a complete failure of Drag and Drop system-wide. However, this experience was actually on a machine I had upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro with ALL my my original applications - including Fences 2.13 - already installed under Win 7 Ultimate. In this first machine, the failure with Fences was continuously evident. The only way to eliminate the Drag and Drop failure was to completely uninstall Fences v 2.13.

I am now going to do a fresh install of Fences v 2.13 on this same machine and see if the Drag and Drop problem manifests itself agaon. As stated elsewhere in these Topic postings, it may be that an Windows 7 to 10 upgrade process creates the aforementioned problem with Fences 2.13. I will report back as soon as I have the time to re-install Fences on this second machine.

I know this is old but it just happened to me when I installed W10 over W7.  My Fences 2.10 did not work so I installed the update of 2.13 and it works now.

Still problems.

Have removed Fence, and download latest version(2.13) and cleaned PC with CCleaner, restarted and cleaned again.

Installed Fence 2.13 again, and still same problem.

Still no fix on this???

Fences 2 development is over.  Fences 3 is the currently supported build.

edit - 22.09.16

Now it all work. I dont now what happen, but all work just fine. Maybe a update from W10? I dont know, but I am happy again :-)

Very big chance that was W10 Enterprise Insider Preview, was the problem.

But Thanks!

Problem solve :-)

Then I bought Fence 3(Fences® 3 Upgrade).

But it was TOTALY WASTE OF MY TIME & MONEY!!!

Uninstalled Fence latest version of 2. Cleaned with ccleaner. Restaret PC.

Right click on Fence 3 and install by administrator. Fence command to restart PC, and do sow.

When start up again I tried to make "folders", but Fence says there are problem with windows(chrome, other folders ect.) Close these. Still problem.

Closed all windows & apps.

Uninstalled Fence latest version of 3. Cleaned with ccleaner. Restaret PC.

Install with administrator rights.

When re-start up again I tried to make "folders", but Fence still got problem, and I can`t make take my "folders"

I think I have install & uninstall 4-5times(like explained over here), all with error.

I give up :-(

Is it just me that got problem with Fence 3.0 with W10?

I do use W10 Enterprise Insider Preview OS updated.

There is a known issue with Fences and the latest Insider preview.  I believe there may be a beta update released soon which will address this.

Personally I would recommend against the use of the Insider preview builds of Windows 10.

Anyone knows why the upgrade from fences 2 to fences 3 is just as expensive as buying a new license ? It's not nice to let us pay as much as new users while there isn't a breakthrough in new functionality.

Value for money I would say

Hi.

Same problem for me, but with Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit.

Problem with fresh Fences 2.x!!!

Upgraded to Fences 3.x: still the same problem.

I can't create new fences, can't move icons.
