My wife's pst file causes her p4 T30 thinkpad with 512 megs of ram take somewhere around 7 - 10 minutes to load outlook and it pretty much stops you from doing anything else, the pst file is 1.4 gig, I keep telling her to clean the dang thing up or move stuff over to the database and link it so it doesn't have to load constantly. She's got this thing about having past and present emails ready at hand...

so, yeah the size of your pst can very well do that....

IPlural, that's what I was thinking and she definitely has a lot of emails saved in there, I told her to back up the pst file and empty out the saved and deleted folders...

Keila, she can't turn off Messenger because she skins for it... so that wasn't an option.

I use a program named "Outback Plus" which will back up all the mail in Outlook to a file I keep on another drive. Then whenever outlook starts to slow down I just click on Outback Plus and when it is done I go in and delete all the various email files I've saved. If and when I ever need a particular email I can just restore the backup for that particular week, month, or year (depending on how often you want to run the cleanup.
The same company also makes this same kind of program for Outlook Express. You can try the program out free for 15 days.

Thanks for that tip and link HuronJoe, I needed the information for a friend of mine.
I don't use OE myself, I use Outlook (and I just backup my .pst file)
My friend has limited income so I doubt she would want to pay for that program as good as it sounds.
I appreciate your input though....

It is a bit expensive, but you can back up many other files at the same time. (Not actually a backup program per se but you can pick and choose quite a few different files that you want to "protect") It comes with a link you can put anywhere (of course anyone from this site can set up links themselves) like on the desktop and it remembers whatever your last configuration was and backsup them all in about 3 to 5 seconds. Really fast.

Get a "pie-chart" for All Windows XP Drives

If you go into My Computer, right click on one of the drives and click Properties, you can see a pie chart for that drive, showing how much of its space is free and how much is used. But how about seeing multiple drives? Who wants to right click and click Properties on ten drives? Try this instead:

Click Start and then click on My Computer.
Click on your C: drive. Now, hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard and click on the the other drives. For example, if you have a C:, an E:, an F: and a G: drive, click on the C: drive, hold down the CTRL key, and then click on the C:, E: F: and G: drives. Now let go of the CTRL key. All of drives should be highlighted. Right click on one of the drives and click the Properties command.
The properties dialog box will now show several tabs, one tab for each drive. Now you can just click on a tab instead of having to repeat that right click operation over and over. Cool!

Outlook has its own backup system (I think its a free plugin from Microsoft). You can schedule it to backup every so often and the nice thing is it only runs when Outlook is open. Also you should compact your folders every month or so. The pst file can get pretty big even if you have very few saved emails.

umm - how to play practical joke on your favorite techie assumming you have a few minutes alone with their computer.

1) Take a screenshot (Ctrl-PrtScr) of their desktop. Paste it into a drawing program and save it as a *.bmp
2) if using windows xp, hide desktop icons, other flavors, put them in a safe place (not on desktop)
3) move their taskbar to the top of the screen and resize it to nothing
4) disable any startup shells like desktopx for instance
5) set the screenshot in step 1 as the background.
6) and for gods sake - remember where you put anything and everything that you turned off so you can fix it when you hear the screaming.

#59 sounds like something I did with my PC at work when DesktopX was starting development and I just started to use it.  I guess this would keep your desktop "secure" or just frustrate anyone who tried to use it:

1) find a favorite picture for your wallpaper

2) cut out portions of the picture to make objects from

3) place objects on correct location of picture (used as background) so only you know where the objects are.

 

CTRL - F5 is refresh from server (not cache) in IE

run lsrez.dll in LiteSTEP set to a refresh rate around 120 at 1600x1200 on your 17" screen...then look blank.....

Have a sunburn? Use apple cider vinager and a washcloth,and apply directly, or in bathwater and soak.... it will instantly ease pain and reduce heat from the sunburn. You may smell like a salad, but its worth it!

Got inkmarks, blood, or other stains on a satin garment(especially a white one), use CLear Windex on a papertowel and blot at the stain, takes it right out!!!(Note, you must use the clear Windex on white, anyother color will stain. How ironic )
