Fleet Sizes Changing

This probably comes from an AI buff, but it's very disconcerting.

On the map, a fleet indicates that is has two medium-size ships:

But when I attack it, it suddenly grows:

Obviously, I would rather know what to expect before sending my ships after an enemy fleet.

I'm having the exact same problem.  It's very annoying and makes it a lot harder to plan attacks and defenses!

For some reason the pics you posted aren't working for me, but my guess is that the ships you are attacking have carrier modules and are launching fighters at you. It would indeed be nice if the tooltips told you when fleets have carrier modules before attacking.

I can't see your pictures for some reason, but could those ships have carrier modules?  Fighters don't show up until the fleet is in battle.

Those ships you're attacking are Carriers. Carriers don't show their fighters until combat begins, so what looks like an easy target is actually a deadly force. I can tell that even though your pictures are blank, because I am an extensive user of Carriers, and I also know well what it's like to be on the receiving end of a Carrier attack. This is why, when you see a ship that has relatively low armaments for its size, or if it's classed as a "Support" despite being a Medium/Large/Huge hull, always be wary that these ships are probably Carriers, and plan accordingly.

Carriers are extremely powerful, because they allow a fleet to have more ships than their Logistics would otherwise allow, and those ships are always using one each of the best weapon and armor technology you have available. They effectively make individual Small and Tiny ships obsolete. You'll probably need to start fielding carriers of your own to keep up.

They are not carriers; they are medium-hull escorts. In the photo, I have not actually started the battle. I have only gone into the confirmation screen, and it lists eight ships. I've also seen the number beneath fleets jump from 3 to 20 and back again during Altaria's turn.

That doesn't mean they're not carriers. The tooltips won't tell you a ship is a carrier, you just find out that there's suddenly like 20 identical Small ships in the fleet once you initiate combat. If you're so sure that these aren't carriers, post a picture on imgur or something so that we can see it, because the ones we got from you are blank.

I'm working on the photos. What role do carriers show up in, and what is their usual hull size? I would assume large support? And do the fighters appear in the "Confirm Battle" screen before combat is properly initiated? Maybe they are, but they don't fit with what I understood carriers to be.
