Music Review: Cody Simpson "La Da Dee"

Cody Simpson

La Da Dee

Album: Surfer’s Paradise

Year: 2013

Cody Simpson misses his ex-girlfriend in the  chirpy  “La Da Dee.”

A balmy guitar opens the single,  setting a casual tone. Only one girl can capture his mind. Without her, he doesn’t know who he is anymore. His eyes are puffy from crying. He finds his sunglasses on his dresser and puts them on. He hasn’t been out for weeks. He needs a distraction and a way to get her out of his head. (“There's no way to say this song's about someone else/Every time you're not in my arms/I start to lose myself/Someone please pass me my shades/Don't let them see me down/You have taken over my days/So tonight I'm going out.”)

In the pre-chorus, at his friend’s party, a couple of girls have flirted with him However, he smiles and says the right things but feels nothing. He’d rather be with his ex. (“Yet I'm feeling like/There is no better place than right by your side/I had a little taste/And I'll only spoil the party anyway/Because all the girls are looking fine/But you're the only one on my mind.”)

In the chorus, he believes they are meant to be. (“La da dee/La da dee doo/La da da me/La da da you/La da dee/La da dee doo/There's only me/There's only you/La da dee/La da dee doo/La da da me/La da da you/La da dee/La da dee doo/When you were gone I think of you.”)

His friends decide to cheer him up. Every girl with short, blonde hair gets his attention and he thinks it’s her. In his head, he thinks of what she would say to him or how she would react. He doesn’t know what to do. (“All these places packed with people/But your face is all I see/And the music's way too loud/But your voice won't let me be/So many pretty girls around/They're just dressing to impress/But the thought of you alone has got me spun/And I don't know what to say next.”)

               The pre-chorus is sung again.

               The chorus is sung twice.

In the bridge, he goes along with his friends and acts as though he’s fine. They think he’s ok and recovered by the time they take him home. However, once inside, the tears well up. (“I pretend the night is so beautiful/Take a photo with the brothers/La da dee/La da da doo/They won't see through my disguise/Right here behind my eyes/Replaying in my mind/La de da.”)

              The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

For Simpson, those happy feelings remain from his relationship. He gets giddy just thinking about her. He’s still with her in his mind. However, he doesn’t seem broken up about it at all. It’s like a game to him.

The bouncy  “La Da Dee” has spent too much in the sun, burning off brain cells.
