Takes up 25% cpu

Deskscapes 3 works fine on my windows 7 ultimate system.

However when I try to use deskscapes 8.2 every time I open explorer it adds 25% cpu load to the explorer process. If I run two instances of explorer it takes 50%, 3 = 75% etc. The moment I uninstall deskscapes it all returns to normal.

Even if I disable deskscapes without uninstalling I still have the problem.

Advise you to bring the problem to the attention of Stardock support - https://esupport.stardock.com/

Save the 'autoreply' for your ticket number. Then don't write again until you hear from an actual person. If you do before then, your request for help will be kicked to the end of the line. Look for all responses in the email linked to your Stardock account. If you don't see them there, look in that email's 'spam' folder.

Am using deskscape and when I don't have a dream running my CPU is about 5%.  Depending on the drean it can go to 30-90%.  Am not sure why yours is so high.  I'am running an old duel core 3000 mhz.

I am seeing the same CPU issue but have my doubts DeskScapes is the culprit.  I have done online searches and there are way too many people having this problem to be a Stardock issue.  Unfortunately, none of the solutions that have worked for others have worked for me.  And none of them involved DeskScapes.  I even chatted with an MS tech who gave me some steps to resolve the issue but it came back a week or so later.

I agree, gevansmd.

Christopher Eckersley, I think if you really want to get to the bottom of what's causing this you should download a free utility by Mark Russinovich called

Process Explorer which is the Windows Task Manager on steroids: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

You should be able to figure out what's causing this much more easily and accurately with it.

I'm experiencing the same issue as described with DeskScapes 8.20:

When I open a Windows Explorer instance (%windir%\explorer.exe), I have an additional instance of explorer.exe that shows up in the Process list and this instance keeps one of my CPU core max out to 25%.

I recently updated from version 8.00 which did not show this behavior.

So for now I've switched back to version 8.00 and its fine: I see the additional instance of explorer.exe shows up, but only very briefly (about a second)...

BTW I'm on Windows 7 (x64).

I'm wondering what exactly is this temporary explorer.exe instance doing...

Hi,

I,ve got the same issue,(not anymore by the way)

When u search on this problem, on the internet they talk about virusses relating to this issue, But whats different is that they are all talking about the normal explorer.exe using too much cpu. That is a whole other issue, and not that uncommon because explorer is an important part of windows, so there are lots of other problems corresponding with it.

I get an extra explorer process that generates a cpu "standard" usage of 25%, if i'll open another explorer window then it will use also 25%.( add,s up to 50% and so on!)

Having this problem for days, i searched for answers, untlil i went to task manager and went to source control inside performance. There was the normal explorer(.exe) with 59 threads and 0 cpu usage. That's normal!

The extra explorer using 25 % was also there, having 1 thread??Strange?? So i looked at the sources and deskscapes was mentioned like 6 times. So i tried to shut down deskscapes, what did not work. Because i doesn,t shut down it puts itself on hold, i knew because it was still mentioned in the source .

So i completely removed it from my PC, and there it was, finally i found the problem, Deskscapes was being funny. Not Funny!

So it is not a Qeustion if deskscapes is the culprit, it is a fact! Now i can open a dozen, explorer windows and there will be no extra explorer.exe mentioned in the taskmanager!

I don't know how long this was going on, because i never use explorer-windows, the problem doesn't happen if you go to your files via, "name" or computer or directly like going to documents via the start menu.

In the beginning i was very positive about the stardock products, but i only found out about this because object dock was not workin properly, so i could not get in to my folders the proper way and had to use explorer.

So i will try to get stardock some feedback,

Using deskscapes = a bit more cpu obviously, because Dreams are made of videos mostly so it's same as playing media on your system which also uses extra cpu.....If you have a decent pc configuration, you shall not face such problems..... B) still if you want to use dreams that use less CPU try out

dynamic dreams OR hybrid dreams and mpeg-2 dreams at the dream gallery

You don't understand the issue,

My pc config: asrock z97 extreme6

                   intel i5 4690k

                   asus strix gtx 970

                   2 ssd,s

How is that not decent?? It's brandnew!!!

This topic is about deskscapes that is corrupting explorer, making each new explorer window having it's seperate process, each one you open uses 25% of cpu, so if you open four that's 100% cpu usage.

The normal explorer.exe is doing everything ( including, running the dreams) like i already told, and that one is using 0 to 1% of my cpu.

It is not the video using that amount,

you really  think that a little video like that willl use more cpu, then the newest games more than all the prograams on my pc running at the same time.

End of Irrynthius's quote

Yes, that's decent enough...and more than is necessary for running such things as Deskscapes, however, if and when you strike problems running something/anything it is not entirely an attributable fault to one singular entity.  Cause and effect is 'entertaining' at best.  If an issue were SOLELY with a specific program it would be the same for everyone...and when it is not [as is the case with Deskscapes - not everyone has this issue] then it is system/install - specific.

That is indicative of one of several things [or more], ie. bad install, missing dependent codecs [in the case of Dreams and Win 8] or actual conflict with another installed program.

Any and/or all of those are the purview of Stardock Support who can respond directly to a specific opened ticket.

Not every case is going to be the same, even if people argue cause and effect by removing Deskscapes and seeing the problem 'disappear'.

The correct course of action is to contact support@stardock.com  and open a ticket.   These forums can offer anecdotal solutions from similar experiences but they may be less than ideal...;)

("""""Same Issue as Irrynthius""""") would have described the same, different platform AMD 2.8 x4, 8GB 1333, ATI 5770 1GB, win 7 64bit, fully updated visual studio packages and .net framework packs..

If you'll simply roll back to DeskScapes 8.10 problem solved. There is a whole thread on this here in these forums. I'll see if I can find it.

But it would be better if it was fixed.

Re-Installed Descapes 8.10. Maximum activations reached. Can someone reset this for me?

Don't have 8.1 ...  had 3.5....  upgraded purchase of 8.2..   """""feeling robbed"""""

The problem went away for me when I used msconfig to remove the DeskScapes service from the list of services run at boot time.  It still starts the dream at automatically when Windows loads but no more explorer processes chewing up 100% of cpu.

If anyone can reproduce this I'll walk you through collecting the data and do a debug of it. As long as I can anonymize your data and make a blog post out of it anyway.

My blog is http://www.windowsperf.com/blog, and I'm a Microsoft employee. Posts my own, blah blah.
