If your intention is strictly for a home pc XP would be ur best bet. you will find that there is greater software support for the mass home market. 2000 will be more useful for business purposes.
Also XP is based on the same Kernel as 2000 but has a more interesting user interface and the restore feature. Which is a saving grace for those of us that like to mess around with our OS a little too much.

If you're going to be using older peripherals (scanners, older modems, etc) beware. Make sure that their drivers can be supported by XP first, otherwise you'll be spending a lot more money than you'd planned.

I just switched my home pc from W2K to XP Pro and I love it. The XP interface is customizable so you can get rid of some of the interface enhancements if they slow you down. Plus the Pro version isn't as "dumbed-down" as the Home version I've heard.

I'm going to switch my work pc to XP Pro as soon as I get settled in at home so it'll be a smooth transition.
