Help a noob with a simple tech tree modding question

So i've poked around a bit and haven't been able to find an answer to this, but i'm trying to modify the tier requirements for research so that the amount of required research stations is increased. I've tried editing the number of stations per tier in the galaxy.constant file but it only leads to a ctd. Am I being obtuse, or can this not be modified?

I.e., you want 10 research stations required for tier 8 research?

Yeah it should be the gameplay.constant file. A ctd probably means you screwed something up in the process.
