[2.13.0] Exotic bugs (Shift-Delete unwanted multiple items on Desktop)

Here are two "exotic" (and sporadic) bugs that the support could not reproduce in several attempts. Since those occur over several versions of Fences (even v1), several new installations on several systems and even Windows re-installations, it is nearly sure that they are problems of Fences itself. Maybe someone has the time to test them out and bring the missing link to reproduce them or even a solution.

Bugs:

01. Hide link arrows: There is the function in Fences to hide the small arrow overlay icons Windows does for links to files and folders. By default, two out of four are activated and i keep it that way (also i tested any other combination). Since Windows 8 and now 8.1 and even 8.1 "Update", there has been a bug with the display of those arrows that seems to occur only when Fences is installed. And knowing of the function mentioned above seems to prove it could be a bug. The problem itself is, that every now and then, ALL arrows are missing until one does refresh the view (context menu or "F5"). Espoecially after a reboot, but also many times when just working on a system. Doing a refresh shows the arrows again (except the hidden ones of course) and the stay until they are lost again by some unknown cause. Can someone reproduce this?

02. Wrong double marking: This on is REALLY hard to reproduce since it seem to happen only sporadic/by chance. For example, when in do a link from a browser to a webpage by dragging and dropping it to the desktop from the open browser window (i have two screens so i just drag it to the second while the browser is maximized) and then minimizing the browser, that icon is marked as if clicked once and has focus. When i now click on any OTHER icon on the desktop, hold the button and move it, in 6 out of 10 cases the other symbol is moved also. It seem that there is a problem with the handling of focus and windows/desktop in any form. I have seen threads here that seem to mean the same problem but describing it in another way. Anyone seen anything like this?

Addendum: Please see added examples in post 2 and 6!

Addendum: Maybe this also has do to if someone has enabled the selection box feature available in the newer Windows versions so you can check the checkboxes to mark several item instead of holding STRG or Shift to do so. There could be a context here since this is deactivated by default and most users leave it this way but i use it. I was not able so far to check it.

03. Desktop loading time: While doing several advised tests with the new 2.13 version, i found out by chance that the problem with extended desktop loading times i thought that ObjectDock is causing is instead caused by Fences. I also found a few posts on the forums that seem to describe this also. As of this moment, this is uncertain.

After further and more complex investigations i came to the conclusion that this most likely is caused by Windows 8/8.1 and its way of booting and starting the system and how it gives feedback about its state to the user. Quit not absolutely sure but closer than the other guess.

Addition to number 02: This can be rarely fixed when clicking somewhere else on an empty space on the desktop and so deselecting the selected/marked item. One even can see it flicker a moment when it gets deselected instead of selecting another one and dragging them together in error.

Just a moment ago i had the chance to see bug number 02 again and completely document it (of course, after it happened). Please see the two screenshots below wich explain it maybe better than just words could do.

I just tried recreating the second problem and the same thing happened to me.  I tried creating a 3rd link by dragging a URL from Chrome and when I did all 3 shortcuts were selected.  I tried it with 4, 5 and 6 shortcuts and each time I created a new one, it was selected along with all the previous ones I had made.  I've never come across this before as I don't usually create shortcuts this way

Thanks, BlueLightAlarm, anyway. It is good that someone can confirm this since i believe support was not believing me at all. This thing happens more often than someone might think. The link dragging was just an easier to reproduce example. I have deleted stuff from my desktop unwanted when i dragged things to the trash through this bug! This is a major problem, it just is hard to understand and to test ...

No,it will be read and ignored should they deem nothing to bother of.  :|   Besides the enthusiastic bugs-reports,I found the thread-and the other one which related to OB-is kind of annoying. Sorry.

Bugs:

02. Wrong double marking (Addendum): Just had the chance to make screenshots of this very strange bug again and will describe its appearance.

However, it is the same example as above; dragging links from my browser. I had Firefox open maximized (fullscreen) on my second monitor. I dragged the adress bar icon of the website i was visinting to my desktop shown on my first screen wich resulted in this:

You can see the weblink item "Lifeless Planet" on my desktop. Since it landed in a Fence i set to collect such items by a rule and it was just a reminder, i wanted it on another place on my desktop.

But when i just minimized Firefox, left-clicked on the dropped link and started to move it, that was the result:

The other item, this time the one just above the wanted (most likely the last one i accessed before) is selected also and moved along with the other one. Of course i did not select more than the one item i wanted to move. Also, again, this never happens without Fences! So it is nothing else like Windows itself causing this as it seems.

I hope this will help tracking down this really strange one! =)

I had to remove the second image in the last post as it wasn't posted right.

These all really need to be emailed to support.

@Island Dog,

i made a ticket to that special image problem already. I posted all four images on this page in the same way and just the fourth was shown as code instead of image even the forum software generated correct HTML code as the HTML viewer showed me.

EDIT: I fixed it by just resaving the image. Maybe it got corrupted while saving or when the JPG image compression kicked in.

These problems i document here were mailed to support several times without anything happening. So i decided to post them here to see if anyone knows a solution to this problems.

Update:

This also happens with 2.13 i found by chance today; was using 2.12 before. Can be reproduced as mentioned above.

#02.  I have issue similar.  Say you have multiple Icon Folders on the Desktop, then you select one Icon and start to rename it.  Well, it will rename another random folder icon to the same name.  I never had issue until I purchased Fences.  Doesn't happen all time, but it sure happens enough to be noticed.

Finally some people stand up and agree on this so they cannot say they cannot reproduce this or this is just happening for me. So thanks for the support to BlueLightAlarm and StarDock_com4568!

Looking at the problem it seems to be very strange and hard to reproduce, sure. But when understood, it is a real thread. How easily i found two items in the trashcan instead of just the wanted one – or even deleted immeditely – is spooky. Especially this is a Desktop enhancement for the cause of managing this items.

We still have not been able to duplicate this internally. For anyone having this issue, it is probably best to open a support ticket with us if you have not already so we can add this information to the internal ticket on this issue.

Please download and run the following utility:

http://sd.stardock.com/SDSupportTool.exe

This is a tool that we use to gather relevant log files and basic information about your computer. Once the utility finishes running, please attach the .zip file it creates on the desktop when you create a ticket here.

Also, please reply with any screenshots that may help illustrate your issue(s)(if applicable).

I personally reported this in by ticket two or three times already. Your tool found no problem on my systems as there is none – it is Fences itself causing this as it immediately stops happening with Fences uninstalled.

I was told there is some kind of "internal ticket" for this but that's it. Issue is nearly two years old for me; happende already with Fences 1.

The problem with the screenshots is: what do you expect to see from them? Two desktop items selected? That says nothing as you can see above with mine. Fences just selects the clicked item and a random other item and does the intended action to both of them, that's all. Woul be surprised if anyone can describe that any better. One must do a video instead to show this but you wouldn't see more than we are telling you already. Is that so hard to imagine? A better way would be to search for similarities on the affected systems but i don't know what that should tell you. The one similarity that is important is an installed version of Fences. Tried an three different systems by now and can confirm this on each of them.

I haven't tried to reproduce after upgrading from v2.11 to v2.13 but here is how I know it always happens.

I teach and do research, so I have to grab alot of Chrome links.  So, I have many desktop folder icons like "RESEARCH -- network security", "RESEARCH - security when wireless", etc.  So, I think of a new topic, say "Wireshark issues" so I create new folder on desktop without name, default whenever WIndows gives it.  Then, I grab a link down from Chrome to desktop, and rename that link to what I will remember, then drop it into the new folder.  Then, I go and rename that folder to something like "RESEARCH -- Wireshark" instead of "New Folder".  Then, I move that link into it.

Well, I look at desktop and I have two folders with same name.  So I have hit CTRL-Y to unname but I doubleclick in icon to remember name, then I undo naming.  Then, rightlcik on foolder to name then drop that name in.

And, it fixes issue.  But, I believe it is something with Fences.  Didn't ever happen until I got Fences.

I hope that that is how you can reproduce.  I will watch and try to remember steps to tell you in future.  But, I can promise you that it mgiht accidently multiple select icons to name.  I am not doing it.

Hope that helps, thanks,

David Fullerton

The tool isn't used to 'find a problem'...it's used to record a status-quo that may be replicated and thus resolved...ie. not an 'error log' but a 'system status log'...;)

If it's requested you run it...and submit the generated log to support then that's what you do...;)

I know the tool did not fix the reported problem. What i meant was that you are also looking for errors that are reported by DirectX diag and such and therefore can tell the people to reinstall it first to see if this causes the failure – or other needed APIs and such. I am not a English native; maybe it put it just a bit wrong.

I run it all the times i was asked for. ;-) I wouldn't stay in your way when you're trying to help me. I just know what i do ... but okay, who does not say so? ^^

Yes. Same problem here. I was using the old free version of Fences for a few months, and this morning I purchased the full version in desperate hope that upgrading would fix the problem.

I'm a developer, and am constantly moving software back and forth via FTP applications. This bug doesn't just happen to me when dragging internet shortcuts, it also happens when dragging directly from FileZilla and WinSCP.

Three times this week I've shift-deleted half of the files on my desktop when I meant to just delete one. I use multiple monitors, and often shift-delete for security, and don't notice that I have a previous selection on my other screen that gets "added" to the new one. This, of course, forced me to whip out an undelete app to recover my now-partially-corrupt files.

I'm a little bit glad to see I'm not the only one having this problem. I wasn't sure if it was really Fences even though I noticed it right after I began using it. Up until this week, I mostly just dealt with the "Why do I have fifteen files on my desktop with the same file name?" issue, but now that I'm wiping files right and left, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to dump fences until this gets resolved. I'll open a support request as well, but yes, exactly the same problem you are noticing.

Glad to hear so much new additions to this at least! Thought i was the only one since support always told me they cannot reproduce this (and they seem to still cannot). Should have posted it here earlier i guess. It is a little bit tricky but just trying around five minutes or such most likely will produce at least one case of this. I had hoped the developers would have more insight in this than me.

The shift-deleting is what i also experienced and why i think this is a major issue. This so often leads to data loss and if someone does not know that it is a Fences bug, the negative reaction would be even worse as the people at least will see that it does not happen without it.

Dragging links just was an example; it happens all the time when switching between Desktop and other applications it seems. It looks to me like the last used item stays selected when opening another application and when selecting something else on the Desktop it selects the old and the new selection. However, often it is just random it seem what it selected besides the desired selection.

EDIT: Tried to make a better thread title so we can see how much more users are affected.

I found another way of reproducing the problem with the unintendedly selection of other desktop items sometimes. This time it happened when i selected just two items, shift-deleted them (by holding down the Shift key and then pressing the Delete key on my keyboard) and directly after the both items were deleted, the selection moved to another (most likely random) item without me clicking somewhere.

Maybe support can try this instead the methods mentioned before.
