[1.4 + Dead] Still act like living in some aspects

I just tried to play the new DLC race and I have a few questions:

1.  Why do an undead faction, that explicitly does not need food, require grain resources before pioneers will found a new city?

2.  Why does the Plague world event affect the undead?

3.  The whole faction seems unbalanced versus the living.  There's no way that I've found, unless you get VERY lucky with the start positions, for the faction to compete.

I like the idea of the faction but execution seems to be a bit short of the mark.

1. I attribute this to the need of having decent soil to dig up graves and have the dead come from the graves below. It doesn't have to be greatly fertile, but needs to have some decent digging soil.

2. (Out of game reason... making a random event not show up to a specific faction would require a deeper code change) (In Game Attempt) The plague event causes brittle bone disease and is quite devastating to both the living and skeletal dead... horrible disease...

3. Well I don't have the DLC so I can't answer this question thoroughly. But I believe the balance comes from the fact that the undead have basically an unlimited supply of troops to field since they require no upkeep. Giving you the advantage of numbers vs. quality Even the best towns will fall to the might of unlimited skeletons.

I haven't had too many problems. The undead units are pretty strong. Especially the banshees (female dead). Taking 50% less damage, wage-free troops, and the terror ability the dead is very strong in combat. Also, you can churn out a ton of weak skeleton units and beat down enemies in a battle of attrition.

Considering you aren't going to have a level 2 city for a little bit you should make a pioneer as soon as you find a good second city location. After a few battles with humanoids you can get your third city. Onnce you solve the growth problem (Gravetouched trait (for empire), growth buildings, Sovereign's call for Kingdom Sov with Life Magic) you can clean house.

If you are playing the dead try to be at war for as much of the game as possible.

It certainly does depend on how you play them.  The most important resource for the Dead are the cities and armies of your enemies.  Declare war early, grab death shards, essence is very important.

But if you play the Dead like other factions, they will be underpowered.

I am LOVING the Dead. Made a custom faction with Corruption, and now Morrigan's Call is the best. Having units with undying curse AND ethereal? I get 6-person units that take half of physical damage. This is early-game, too, so I've been wrecking house. My style has always been to build NO units (henchmen or binding instead), but the Dead have converted me to army-builder. Thanks, Derek!
