Galatic Civilization III founding and Steam

Will GalCiv3 be coming to Steam Access? And regardless of this will those who pre-purchase it now get a steam key in the future?

After preordering you get the steam key. It's available for steam only.

Currently a Steam key will not show up on your account. It will show up when the Alpha/Beta is released. More info on this here: https://www.galciv3.com/game/faq

I'll preorder in an instant if I hear about a Linux port. A whole community waits for more details (if OS/2 can get one, surely we can as well )

First windows/mac/linux port for stardock perhaps?

Q: What are the requirements to run Galactic Civilizations III?A:It will require a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or 8 along with a DirectX 10 or 11 compatible video card. There will be no 32-bit version. Most PC gamers in 2013 have this kind of hardware, and it allows us to create the best game possible for the majority of our customers.

 

Q: Why are you requiring 64-bit?A:We want Galactic Civilizations III, and future expansions, to be able to handle extremely large galaxies with a very high resolution graphics and large data sets for the computer AI to make use of. It allows us to design the best game possible without being constrained by the limitations of older hardware.

 

Q: Why don’t you support DirectX 9?A:DirectX 10 and 11 allow us to easily have multiple threads touch the graphics card simultaneously. This results in much higher-quality font rendering, makes it a lot easier to support advanced UI scaling, and makes the game less CPU-bound which will be important for giving the artificial intelligence engine more processing power to execute VCSS’s (Very Complex Strategy Simulations). As with the decision to be 64-bit, it allows us to create a better game for the majority of players that already meet the requirements.

Ah nuts, that reliance on DirectX 11 doesn't sound right for cross-platform game, even worse, wine doesn't support 10 or 11 at all yet.

Least Galciv1+2 are playable on this box.

Thanks! No RAM or CPU/mghz requirements?

DirectX 10 may be an issue for me...

I think as long as it's a 64 bit processor you will be ok. It's fairly new tech. Ram...well I'll go out on a limb and say try to get 4gb at minimum but strongly suggest 8gb. No rush you ahve time to slowly build up your system

OpenGL allows for multithreading pretty much the same as Dx 11. Is there no chance of GalCiv3 being not exclusive to Windows platform?

With some developers, it seems like they unecessarily beef-up system requirements with every new release.

I know SD doesn't do this, but the reason I didn't get into the Elemental beta was because my old computer couldn't handle the system reqs.

So just to make sure, I ask.

So much depends on what developers they have, if theyre exclusively a Windows shop with Directx experience then it makes sense. Things like the Steambox probably dont affect SD, although if Rome Total War 2 is coming our way, the sky is the limit (not a great game I know at the mo, but massive AAA game it must be said).

Oh well, back to Europa Universalis IV for me

Nothing wrong with asking. I listened to a Podcast (3 moves ahead or Polycast) where Brad explained the advantages of 64 bit processors and how 32bit processors was a huge limitation for them. By forcing the hardware upgrades they may alienate some people but they will be able to deliver a much better game in the long run. According his explanation the reason why AI suffers in many 4x games is not because they are poorly designed but because of the limitations of the hardware they have to support. I'm hoping Frogboy can jump in and explain this better. He had a very good detailed explanation. I really think it was one of the more recent Polycast episodes on thepolycast.net.

I feel angry now.

I've waited....hmm...I cannot remember how long, for GCIII, and now to find out it will REQUIRE DX 10/11 and 64x, right as I think about migrating to a linux system on an ancient PC that barely runs GCIIUE?

 

I'm sorry guys, but its possible you'll not get a purchase from me again for a long, LONG time.

 

though one tip:

DO NOT go with any DRM(aside from steam, as people can get over that), as that is the main reason for most piracy(which gets more DRM added, causing more piracy.).

Good point Still with SteamOS on the horizon a linux version of GalCiv3 would be a good idea

Very true indeed, but nothing beats playing a game on your native OS that doesn't require 2 computers to do properly . I run Linux, I love playing Linux games.

 

I'm also pragmatic enough to play windows games when I have no choice, but recently both times (Metro Last Light and Rome 2), have both announced Linux version. A Linux version of Galciv 3 would be amazing. Maybe a stretch goal on pre-ordering?

No worries historically Stardock has always been against DRM.

 

Also DRM is a completely abused term. DRM is good. DRM that forces the legitimate players through headache is a b#**#$t. I've been a fan of Stardock because of their respect they have for their players. GalCiv2 I could let my friend try the game without worrying about anything. Unpatched the game was like a demo. Get a feel of the game but the updates were massive was a huge incentive to pay for the game. DRM only forces revenge piracy.

to be fair, at nearly max quality with UE it runs nicely in strat. map mode on larger maps, but if I zoom in with too many objects on screen it bogs down to a low frame rate.

 

Also, SteamOS is not my intended system, I am either installin Zorin OS soon, or waiting to buy a new PC and put it on that first.

You should clearly advertise that the game will require steam otherwise you are selling people a thing and then do another, again. People who preorder should know clearly.

Small character in a remote part of a single page doesn't normally fall under the definition of "clearly". 

Also under the FAQ section there's this question

Q: Will it have any copy protection?

A:No. Unless you consider requiring a user account copy protection (which we do require as it’s necessary to allow users to be able to re-download the entire game and receive updates and support).

Which try to avoid at most to reply to the question. Using Steam means copy protection, it doesn't need interpretation. Steam is needed to download, update and play. If the customer interest was a priority, that would be written here clearly.
