Normal Units Respawning?

When my normal units die, they respawn at cities like my heroes

Whenever one of my normal, non-hero units is destroyed in battle, for some reason they are respawned at the nearest city on low health, just like any hero would be, and regenerate back to full health in a few turns.

What's going on?! I'm not using any mods, so I'm clueless as to why this particular strange behaviour is occurring

It's a bug. Put up a thread and a savegame in the support forum and they may be able to find the problem. Or you could start a new game and see if the issue goes away.
