AI Relations

Is it just me, or are the AI relations very static in their implementation?

Allow me to explain:

There are MANY types of modifiers that can impact AI relations. 'Our borders are close', 'We are impressed by you', 'You attacked an Empire' are only a few examples. However, with those examples. the modifier is alwaus the same. 'Our borders are close' is always -1.

Is there a 'Our borders are REALLY close' that gives -3 ???

Which 'empire' did we attack....are they close friends with them or just aquaintences? Should there by a 'You attack an Empire whom we are close with' at -5 ???

Also, there is no 'time' value to these relations...or so it seems. Do any of these modifiers ever expire? Sure, I attacked an empire...but will 1000 turns go by with that unwaivering hate being directed towards me....or can I amend my ways given enough time?

Thoughts? Comments?

My biggest gripe concerning this is that there is no diplomatic impact for refusing or giving into bribery demands.  I never give in to the AI's demands because there is no diplomatic hit when I refuse.  It's a terrible implementation.

i don't think the game is meant to be heavy on diplomacy. there are more negatives than positives, so in the end, you'll have to fight someone to win the game. that's probably by design, not just coincidence. you can keep some friends for the whole game if you are more powerful than them. factions of your own ideology tend to be neutral-friendly as long as you don't kill other factions of your shared ideology, so you can probably ally them later on instead of wiping them out. other than that, war against the other side is pretty much inevitable unless you are so far ahead in power that noone dares attack you (in which case you've pretty much won anyway), or if you win by master quest/spell of making before the mid/late game wars break out.

don't know if the game needs a deeper diplo system. it's a war scenario after all - two conflicting ideologies that will inevitably clash at some point. not really the type of setting where a diplomatic builder victory is the main goal.
