[0.92] I can only seem to train Bards from Henchmen technology, not any of the other units

I don't seem to be able to train Torch Bearers, Henchmen or the other units the Henchmen technology indicates you can train. :/  Am I missing something, or is this a bug of some sort?

Some additional tech needed for some of them.  Also try to view hidden units.

... correction, I can also train Shieldman, but not Henchman nor Torch Bearers.

Also, there are odd effects when I use Spellbooks on these units ... if I give them a spellbook they start with the simplistic Adept skill at, they'll tend to get the full first level spells but won't be able to get more advanced ones.  If I give them spellbooks for something they have no Adept skill at, they can progress normally.  I will try to show a screenshot of this.

Torch bearers require the mages staff (technically the accessories Ring of Embers, Ring of Life, and belt of speed). Thus, you need to be able to train mages in order to train torch beares.

For the shieldman, I'm not sure why it is not showing up for you..

Just tested this in-game, first with a custom Altar faction from my current playthrough, then with the stock Altar faction. Henchmen, and all of their pre-made templates, are working in .92.  You could try to use ctrl-r to max your research as a test, then see if they are buildable.

As for the spellbooks, the spell schools for henchmen are very limited, but you can give them the full complement of spells via the Decalon or found spellbooks.

It's because you are missing techs for some of their pre-selected equipment, such as the magic staves and accessories in the case of the torchbearers.

You can design your own henchmen instead with the equipment you have available. Frankly I find that works better as you can fine tune things to combo them better with the abilities of the hero you want to pair them with. A bit more micromanagement involved, but you'll get better results.

How do you design your own henchmen?  They aren't normal units.  They can't be built in groups ... they are essentially trainable Champions.  I'm building them so I can level them into Mages (or other professions), equip them with full spellbooks, etc.

Just go into the design screen and either edit one of the pre-made henchmen designs, or start a new design and select the henchmen tab under the portrait. You can change whatever you fancy that way. Why settle for just a bard or a shieldbearer when you can design your own battlemage or ranger or cleric? It's lots of fun.

I am really starting to think that the henchmen are such a great feature that they should make them available to all the factions and give the Altar blood some other unique ability instead.

Definitely some merit to this idea, imo. And yea, don't use the stock henchmen, making your own specialists is so much better, and a lot of fun. Try making a commander, a mage, and defender for your main armies, last game I had several over 20th level.
