Is 1.16 beta different from the version of 1.16 you pushed automatically? If so, I'll try it.  But if not, the right Windows key is still broken. My only access to the Windows 8 menu is via a shortcut, or pressing Ctrl + the START button.

1.16 beta and 1.16 normal are identical.

Given the problem seems to have been resolved for others, could you double check your settings in Start8.

I have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows8 - 64bit with 2 Stardock licenses. Desktop Start8 (V 1.12) works fine so far. Laptop Start8 (V 1.12) worked for a month and then one day wouldn't appear upon startup. I tried un-install/ re-install with no luck. Just installed latest 1.16 beta and after successful install, no Start8 logo appears in left corner. Computer still boots to Windows 8 startup. Tried everything in settings/ config, still no luck. Un-installed 1.16 and re-installed using "run-as admin" option. Still nothing.

Any ideas?

 **Update

When I open Program files (x86), select Stardock folder, Start8 folder and click on Start8_64 (Application) file, the Start8 flag finally appears in the lower left corner and Start8 1.16 works as it's supposed to. After restart, same original issue. No flag, no operation.

It sounds like the service may be disabled on one of your machines.

Run Start8Tweak.exe (in the app dir) and click the "Enable Start8 Service" button.  Also run services.msc, and check that the Stardock Start8 service is not set to manual or disabled.

Thanks Neil. Ran the tweak and all relevant checks are in place. I selected "start service" but nothing happened. Services shows the program is not running but set to automatic. When I select Start8 and hit run, I get the following error -

"Windows could not start the Stardock Start8 service on local computer - Error 193: 0xc1"

A quick search of this error led to several threads highlighting a problem with programs listed in the SystemDrive folder named "program" or "common". A possible solution was to rename files or move files but this goes beyond my areas of expertise. My concern would be renaming a file and then the program not recognizing the correct file paths.

I may experiment later and see if I can find a possible file to move or rename related to Start8 located in this folder unless you have any ideas.

Thanks again for the help!

OK Stardock. Now I am starting to grow frustrated with this. Still same "Windows could not start the Stardock Start8 service on local computer - Error 193: 0xc1" error.

SERVICES.MSC shows the path to executable as C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Start8\Start8Srv.exe. Registry editor matches these settings. I tried renaming START8 in the system drive folder with no luck as most of the forums recommended with this error.

When I select this Start8Srv.exe file directly in the program folder, the program still doesn't start, so I assumed the path must be incorrect.

When clicking the Start8_64 file, the flag appears and Start8 V1.16 runs perfectly. So, I changed the path to executable file to show C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\Start8\Start8_64.exe and I get the same error.

"Windows could not start the Stardock Start8 service on local computer - Error 193: 0xc1"

An interesting thing to point out is that even after I manually select the Start8_64 file and get the program running, SERVICES.MSC still shows the program as not running. Also, when I select Start in Services, I get the same error even though it's already running.

At this point, I'm ready to pull Start8 off both machines, get my $10 bucks back from PayPal and go with another option unless you guys can point me in the right direction here.

The service is a service so you cannot manually start it by running it yourself, likewise setting the path to be a non service will not work.  The services screen will also only indicate if the service is running, not Start8 itself.  This is why running Start8_64.exe does not change the running status.

From looking online the error would seem to be caused by a file on the HD that's stopping the OS services system from launching the service.  This may be c:\program, c:\stardock, c:\program files (x86)\stardock, c:\start8srv etc.

This is the first time I have ever seen anything of this nature reported, so it seems to be something specific to the one machine and almost certainly is an unfortunately named file on the HD which is preventing the OS from locating the files.  If I were to guess I would say you have something called c:\program.

As an alternative you can set Start8 to startup with your machine by creating a task via the OS task scheduler on login.  Setting it to start Start8.exe or Start8_64.exe on login will allow Start8 to start up for you without using the service.

One other thought, make the path to the service a short file name (c:\progra~1\stardock\start8\start8~1.exe I suspect?).  That may allow the OS to ignore the file on the HD that's stopping it from discovering if the service is valid.

I am having exact same problem on my Win8 laptop. Start8 was working, then suddenly doesn't. Start button not appearing, despite uninstall/re-install, registry removal, etc. Ran Start8Twaek to no avail.

Which version of Start8 are you running?

If you open taskmanager and look on the details tab do you see Start8.exe or Start8_64.exe running?

Also did you use anything which may have "optimized" your windows startup time?
