Problems with Fences 2.1

Unable to freely move my desktop icons between fences

Hi,

I have been experiencing a problem with Fences 2.1 that occurs after I install the application on my Windows 8 x64 operating system.

The scenario:  Before installing Fences 2.1, I am able to freely move my desktop icons to any location I please, without the "Align to Grid" and the "Auto Arrange" options selected; which prevents free-move of icons.  I had these two options turned off and my icons were where I wanted them to be to begin with.

The problem:  Upon installing Fences 2.1, I am greeted with my icons being automatically arranged into the preset Fences the program offers consumers to choose ot help get started.  After my icons were in the preset Fences, I went ahead and created a custom fence on my desktop by right-click and highlighting the area and choosing "Create fence here".

I gave it a name and all then went ahead to try to move my desktop icons from the preset fence into the newly created fence I named "Apps".  I selected the icon and tried to drag and I saw a circle with a line through it as I was dragging and released the icon into the custom fence and nothing happened after that.  The icon I was trying to move just remained in the preset fence.

I tried to create a new folder on the desktop screen itself and test to see if it was just those icons in the preset fence, but, to no avail, the problem re-occured: another circle witha  line through it preventing me from placing the folder into my custom fence.  I made another custom fence called "Test" and both items I tried dragging before still failed to drop into the fence.

I noticed that, after installing Fences, my (Right-click Desktop > View) settings were set to:

- Auto Arrange Icons (Checkmarked)

- Align Icons To Grid (Checkmarked)

I went ahead and removed these checkmarks and tried moving the same icons from the two tests before and still no avail.  The icons refuse to go into the new fence, even when I told Windows to not automatically arrange my icons and align then to the "grid".

Is this a Windows 8 operating system problem?  I don't have a Windows 7 machine, and I really love this software and find it very, very useful to have the many daily day-to-day shortcuts I need to get my batches, apps, and documents quickly.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Are you running DeskScapes too?

What happens if you log out and then log back in (do not reboot)?

1) Yes, I am also currently running DeskScapes in the background on my Windows 8 x64 machine.

2)  After I first boot up my computer into Windows for the first time, I am unable to manipulate the icons.  After trying your suggestion of logging out and logging back into my user:

Somehow, magically, the icons are movable again, and I can move them around to different fences and the fences that I create.  Thanks a bunch!

But, will there be a permanent fix for this problem in the foreseeable future?  This problem also seems to happen when I am running it with DeskScapes too, so you were right about DeskScapes having problems when paired with Fences at hte same time.

I hope to see a fix for this issue soon.

Again, thank you for providing a workaround for me to use.

We are working on a permanent fix.
