Can't connect to secondary computer...

I downloaded the free version of Multiplicity to see how I like it compared to Synergy.  I love the features the paid version offers, but I can't seem to get the free version to work at all.  I've gone through the setup process and designated
my desktop pc as primary (Windows 8) and my laptop as secondary (Windows
7). I've checked the firewall rules on both machines but can't seem to get
them to connect. When I click the checkbox to connect to the secondary
computer I get a message that says "Failed to connect. Please check the
firewall settings on the secondary (should not be set to Public / Guest),
the computer name, and the IP address." I've verified all these things are
correct but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?
