Wearing the Wrong Uniform

... am I?

After a set of harsh critiques a few weeks ago I am getting ready to begin my final semester of undergrad. I said to myself to go into it "like a porn-star". Meaning: I may not like what I will be doing but satisfy the boss-- At least there will be a reward in the end.
Over the past few weeks I have been evaluating myself as an artist. I remember after a painting critique a few years back my professor said something I'll never forget. I still ponder it today...

He said:
"Karen you are an interesting painter. There is a great amount of talent oozing from you, and you can be lazy. You are just someone who wears the wrong uniform."

Afterwards he handed my grade over exposing a "D". Of course I was baffeled (sp?),but more so confused about his comments.

So who is someone that wears the wrong uniform? I interpreted it as: I am trying to be someone that I am not in my art.. . OR.... I am concentrating on 3D art, where as 2D is where I belong.
Although I could rack my brain even more than it already is, he knows his meaning to the comment.

After the end of that semester I would see him as he would walk through the court yard where I was stone-carving. A few weeks later I recieved a phone call informing me that Clayton (prof) had changed the grade giving me a "C". She said he forgot to average in some extra-credit. Now I know there wasn't any extra-credit I had the evaluation sheet and everything was fair. I thanked him the next time we met up. He said: "What are you thanking me for, I didn't do the work."
