Windows 8 always booting to Desktop

Every time I boot into Windows 8, the Metro screen loads but then I am always dropped back to the Windows desktop.

Please note that I DO NOT have "Automatically go to the desktop when I sign in" checked.

How can I stop this from happening or is this a bug?

I have checked here and with that setting disabled Start8 does not go to the desktop.

I imagine you have something on your machine other than Start8 which is making it go to the desktop.
