Start 8 1.1 install over the top?

I have Windows 8 64 bit. Is it best to uninstall previous version before installing the new version? Or is it okay to install over the top?

It appears to make no difference. I've tried both ways , and either way, I'm still not getting the supposed new drag-n-drop functionality.

thanks for taking my money stardock.. for a product that isn't even working in its supposed fashion..

I also noticed nothing has hit through the internal updater. I would prefer to do it that way if possible. Any eta when it might hit?

no, i was wondering that too. but downloading the updated exe file and running it i dont think is any different. i think the internal updater most likely lets you know that there's a new version... not necessarily updating it through the program. idk though

Did you reboot after installing?

Make sure the configuration dialog says 1.1 on the about page too in case you are installing an earlier version by mistake.

Drag & drop is working fine for me with v1.1.

And, by the way. I always install over the top.

It would be a shoddy app if you had to uninstall every time before upgrading.

If anyone does feel the urge to uninstall first vs install over an existing install I would recommend uninstalling and rebooting before installing the new one.

But there is no need to uninstall first anyway, the installer will simply prompt for a reboot on any in use files.

Has the issue of multiple installs being detected in the "programs and features" control panel option been fixed Neil. Previous versions went on as if a "new" install and had multiple installs due to the older versions being retained in the "programs and features" list, just to be on the safe side I uninstalled the old and installed the new on top (without a reboot mind)

That has been fixed.

If you have previous builds listed (from before the fix) they will not be removed.

i actually did reboot after installing after upgrading in-place when noticing that i wasn't getting the drag-n-drop feature to work. it still works how it was before, but just not in the all programs part like it's supposed to now.

and then, yes, after doing an uninstallation and rebooting, i installed 1.1 and did a reboot after that..

and yes, it IS 1.1. it says so. not to mention, i'm getting the other 1.1 features.

the only thing that isn't working for me is the drag-n-drop functionality in the all programs view (still doing whatever it did before) and also.. another thing that isn't working is at the bottom of the changelog, it said there was now a registry key that you can switch to hide tooltips in the start8 start menu, but when i browse to the exact registry directory, the key it points out simply doesn't exist for me.

i have no idea why i'm not getting these 2 things in the 1.1 update. just a little annoying since i just recently purchased the full version

The hide option should be created by you in the registry here : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

Regarding your issue with drag & drop, are you saying you cannot drag anything on the all programs list?  Thats not expected.  The only non draggable items should be the entries under Modern UI Applications.  In order to check that the 1.1 dlls are indeed in use, open the start menu and right click on the start menu (not on an item).  Does the menu that shows up contain just one entry (Configure Start8) or three (Configure Start8 + Run + Shutdown)?  If you get one entry it is 1.1, if you get three it is 1.03.

I know the UI says 1.1, but the UI says what version the UI is not the version of the core dlls so its best we rule this out before we do any more troubleshooting.

i know that's where the hide option should've been created, but it just wasn't for me.

and yes, that's what i'm saying. and yes, it lets me do that and gives just the one entry. although, that's weird because in 1.03, it never gave me any entries when i would right click on an empty space in the start menu.. what the heck.

anyway, i did a system restore back to before i patched the theme dll's with ultrauxthemepatcher and am going to try to upgrade again to 1.1 again.. and BTW, doing the system restore just now, i'm using 1.03 at the very moment and i CAN  confirm that when i right click on an empty space in the start menu, it doesn't do anything.
