Well, so it does. I stand corrected. Try switching to small icons. Do they all get skinned then? If so, then same bugs, new OS.

Edit: Sorry forget what i wrote below that did work for 5 minutes until i added a file to the folder... jumped right back to windows standard.

Edit: I just discovered something strange...
I applied a package everything was working like a charm... then i switched to a diffrent theme and the live folders went back to the windows style.
I have rebuild the icon cache, tested to apply a "selected live folder" nothing worked.
Now i went back to my desk created a folder... it was immediatly taken the live folder from the iconpackage!
The funny thing is as soon as i renamed it to the folder that was not using the pack it changed to windows standard.
It seems that i cant use the name anymore that is applyd to that folder no matter if i add a numeric behind it.

So my workaround currently is to create a new Folder rename it differently/ copy files from existing folder and insert them into the new one.

*rcharris09 i think the problem is in the iconpackager file itself- many of them do not skin the livefolder correctly or some miss the folder...
try downloading this iconpack it has live folders skinned Plump GUI champ entry 2008
A short reply how that worked out would be cool.

Too much of a work-around for the price of this software. I manually edited the imageres.dll file with the folder icons that I wanted. I'm good now, but disappointed with IP. Hopefully the bugs will be fixed soon.

This "bug" has been present with IP every since Win7 64 bit came out. It sure would be nice to have it fixed but I don't foresee that happening, EVER! The live folders constantly revert and have to be updated manually. It is very disappointing.

This is a fix that was posted in a thread a long time ago. I've tried this fix and it has worked for me on a couple of occassions after I've done a reload of my OS. I want to emphasize that this came from someone else who's name has been forgotten or lost to me over time. It is not my own, but it may be worth a shot if you don't mind working in the registry :

Icon Packager Fix :

Solution is to remove registry key "Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shellex\iconhandler"

I don’t know why this key is created when you install IconPackager, the program does not handle .exe files. The only reason to have this entry is when a .exe does not have an icon associated in the .exe, creating a generic .exe icon. But it changes the default icon that other programs read, such as Object Dock. Removing this entry reverts the registry to a default of "%1" which is the icon that is normally associated with any program that is installed. A generic .exe icon is not really needed.

All system tray icons also revered to the defaults (no generic blank icons).

As a side note, you can revert any extension association this way, to find the file association, go to registry "Computer\HKEY_CLASSES\ROOT" find the extension you want to revert and go to the registry entry named under default to change the icon handler. Not all extensions have icon handlers or defaults. if no default entry is present, you can make the extension associate with any icon you wish by creating the sub key "DefaultIcon" and a "(Default)" string value pointing to whatever icon you wish. You can use relative or full paths in string.

This may be resolved also, by changing the "DropHandler" key entry for exefile associations. For this extension, it would make more sense to add the IconPackager entry into the "DropHandler" Key. (info for the programmers)

I just finished a full reinstall of windows 8 after having the same issues with IconPackager changing some of the default icons to a custom icon. Seriously, i couldn't find a working fix anywhere on the internet.

Stardock needs to remove "Windows 8 compatible" from IconPackager!!!

Apart from the above, i'm quite happy with everything else that comes with Object Desktop.

LOL wish I had found this thread earlier. I am having the exact same issues with current IP version and 64 bit Win8. ( https://forums.wincustomize.com/445887/page/1/#3373704 )

From the thread, I found a way to at least get the live folders showing correctly, but it's not an easy process. Then, at some point, an extra image of the front cover started showing up.

I do have a current support case open on this.

hopefully they update iconpackager soon, cause its a must have to complete any cool theme ur using, i mean a real cool theme just doesnt look right with the normal windows icons, id rather not use any windowblinds theme if i couldnt use iconpackager as well, hehehe

agreed. Icon Packager is a must have on my machine. Just tried to install the Plump IP set. Right off the bat, the 'large icon' size in explorer, when the folder is NOT empty, is showing from the previous icon set. The empty folders are correct. sigh.

What VERY odd is that the icons show correctly for less than a second before they are corrupted. Going to apply my fix and see what happens.

After my fix, had to do the "rebuild icon cache" thing. So far all icons are correct. Might just write a script for this.

Still seems to break down at certain points.

Icon Packager seems in need of an update, as live folders with data get reverted back, and some areas aren't skinned (USBs don't seem to get skinned, and user folders don't "stick").

So is it at all safe to use IconPackager with Windows 8 now or what's other people doing for replacing icons?

I had an experience with IP and Windows 8 that led me to delete a registry entry to finally get back to where I wanted to be - I'n not going that route again.

it is safe nothing will happen to your icons and you certainly dont have to delete any reg keys that would be new and im using it since puh forever...
I run windows8 64(SB) and the only problem i run into is that my livefolders wont update when i switch a iconpack for example i use plump and then create folders on my desktop the newly created folders will use the correct folder from the plump pack.
But now if i switch the iconpack theme these live folders will remain the ones from PLUMP until you create new folders then the live folders from the other pack will be used.
SO yeah IP should get fixed and i hope this will happen soon since a fix was demanded for this long long time ago.
But to answer your question it is working with windows8

Then I take it you aren't really bothered with it not working 100% like it should. Are there any IconPackager-developers on these forums? I was amazed to find that almost all Stardock products has a category for problems and questions but IconPackager does not.

This still affect 64bit Windows. Windows 8 and now 8.1 in my case.

The live folder icon are stored in the "imageres.dll" file.

The funny way that Windows works, this file is located in three separate folders:

System32
SysWOW64
WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-imageres_31bf3856ad364e35_6.2.9200.16384_none_d968af13c94ccaf8

The exact folder name of the last might be peculiar to my system, I can't say for sure. Since updating to Windows 8.1, the WinSxS folder is empty.

These folders are system folders and to alter the imageres file requires taking ownership of the files, editing them in a resource editor, saving and rebuilding the icon cache. This is not as easy as it sounds. Windows tends to resist alterations to these files. I've managed to edit and commit the changes to all three, once, and got live folders working exactly as it works on my Win7 32bit system; properly. After being forced to perform a system file check using SFC, some instances of live folders reverted to Windows default. I haven't been able to repeat the process to reinstate.

This is too much to ask of the average user to try and do. I hope that Stardock can finally get around to updating IconPackager. The current version predates Windows 8.

New problem:

Since updating to Windows 8.1, MS has added more icons than IconPackager can handle. I'm referring to icons displayed in File Explorer in the My PC view. The drives are skinned, but the new group "Folders" shows default icons. Same goes for Network locations.

IconPackager is essential to the Stardock skinning experience. It's time its had a thorough overhaul.
