(BUG 1.03) Sometimes App icons are blank plain white in the Recently opened programs menu!

Think I found 2 small bugs.

Sometimes I notice the apps icons are "blank" plain white when they were used and shown in the "Recently opened programs menu"

Also at random times when I open the Stat8 settings its also missing the Start8 icon in the taskbar and instead is just plain white.

If you can fix these little bugs that would be great :)

It sounds like you are suffering from windows icon cache corruption or something leaking a lot of resources as we don't paint the icon on the taskbar, thats totally under the control of explorer.

Next time it happens, open up taskmanager, make sure it is in the more details mode, click on the details tab, right click on the header bar, click select columns and enable GDI and USER resources.  Then see if anything running is using quite a lot.

I am having this same problem - rebooting doesn't help, so it is not a leak. 

I noticed this a few weeks ago and messing around with the Start8 configuration menu would restore everything after a few tries - it has happened a few times since and now today, I cannot get it to work at all.

 

How would I fix icon corruption?

Turns out that it is random for me - sometimes the menu is fine, sometimes blank.  For example, I just opened it and it looked fine - then I re-opened it immediately and it is blank.  The "All Programs" area works fine, it is the Pinned and Recent that are blank.  I don't think the icons are corrupt; there's something else wrong.

 

Generally, I can open the menu once but after that it will be blank unless I wait several minutes for it to "recover".

What version of Start8 are you using as this thread was about 1.03 and the icon code was tweaked since then.

v 1.16

I managed to get it working again:

- safe boot - didn't really help

- checked an alternate user account - with that login, the Start8 menu worked fine and reliably

- used Regedit to remove (export and saved first) Stardock key from my HK_CURRENT_USR

- rebooted - still no love

- re-import REG data to restore the original Start8 settings - still not working

- used Task Manager to disable all Start Up apps that were not listed in the alternate user account

- sign off / sign on - Start8 Menu now working

- enable Start Up apps one by one and check Start8

- all enabled and Start8 is now working

 

I'm not loving this "fix" as it tells me nothing about what was wrong or what got fixed - and the problem could re-occur just as easily I suppose.  For now, it is working though.
