Interested in trying Start8 1.01?

1.01 has now been released.  You can download it from the website, my downloads on the store, or via Stardock Central.

Thanks Neil.

I will try it out.

Also, do you think you could look into being able to use other keys other than the right Windows key?

Many modern keyboards don't have right Windows keys. Only a left one.

Thanks.

If I disable all hot corners, at the top right corner where the close button normally is on a maximized window, there's a dead-space... I click "X" to close the program but nothing is happening. I must move the cursor a bit to the left.

Also, I installed version 1.01 over 1.0 and now I've 2 instances of Start8 in "Uninstall or change a program" list.

They moved it to Windows Accessories. As they did for Ease of Access and System

@Neil:

- you could do the same for Administrative tools. ( => Windows Administrative Tools)

- why is there empty Maintenance and Modern UI applications folders in the menu?

- hover on the shutdown arrow works but it would be even better if it could disappear when you move your mouse anywhere else in the menu (actual win7 behavior)

- will you remove the hand at the top of the screen for this update?

I hoped this one would be fixed in 1.01. That's a serious inconvenience.

As noted in the change notes above, if you add a registry key you can use ctrl + winkey to act like right winkey.

This isn't in the UI currently as some things will be moving around in v1.1 which will make room for it.

This has been addressed in the internal builds.

The items that changed name were changed due to the OS defining them differently in their language definitions.  If an item didn't move it is because thats the name the OS intended to use for it.

Regarding the maintenance entry, thats due to Microsoft leaving those folders but with nothing in them.

The Modern UI applications folder should have items in it though.  It should be a list of the modern UI applications you have installed on your machine.

Did you reboot after installing the newer version?

I just checked here and the search results are appearing correctly.

Yes I did a reboot and the config panel shows version 1.01.

So if you type say paint you get no results under programs?

If you hover over the shutdown button arrow does the menu popup automatically after a short while?

I just wanted to post a bout two issues I have noticed in 1.0 that don't seem to be mentioned in the 1.01 change log.

1. Stardock Central does not detect that Start8 is installed and always lists it in the "New" category.

2. Sometimes transparent squares are show instead of some of the icons on the start menu.

Nope

> If you hover over the shutdown button arrow does the menu popup automatically after a short while?

No there is no popup showing up.

Then it sounds like your version did not update fully.

If you open the start8 folder and right click on the start8_64.dll, pick properties and then the Digital Signature tab, what date does it indicate it is signed on?

I ended up with two Start8 entries in the Progamms and Features dialog.

Uninstalling both restarting and reinstalling gave me a working version.

this was same problem I had, its always better to uninstall old version, reboot and install new

1. I've this same. It's pretty annoying!

2.What's more in 1.01 there's terrible bug, dead space at the left bottom corner and this way I can't run menu start from extreme corner.

3. Would be possible to drag & drop shortcuts from menu start to desktop?

I had it too. I unistalled both 1.01 and 1.00 since 1.00 didn't unistalled when i installed 1.00. Then installed 1.01 and this problem disappeared, altough the right corner X didn't...

1.0.1 I am now able to rearrange pinned shortcuts on startmenu... Can't say I have the issue with corner dead spots with corners disabled though...

i don't know if this is the rigth section..., but i'm missing an option in the start8 settings to change the behavior of the "Start"-Button (Flag) in the charmbar! it would be fine, when i can choose, that a click on it is going to the "modern ui start" (Windows 8 menu) or to the desktop. Now a click on this button looks like to have no function!?

(sorry for my bad english) ;-)

on version 1.01 in Hebrew you fixed the orientation and position of the menu...

Thanks for reporting this.

I have to confess I don't think anyone here reads any of the RTL languages so we didn't notice that, but it should be sorted for the final 1.01 release.
