I've been having this problem as well, it started right after I had to reinstall windows.  I've been trying to track down the issue (hoping it was something screwed up in windows), the error is coming from the MS Visual C++ 2008 distrib:

ERROR: Cannot resolve reference Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.6195".

ERROR: Activation Context generation failed.

Full pastebin available here:  http://pastebin.com/a4Mm28SJ

I tried completely re-installing the game, the 2005 and 2008 VC distribs, and .NET.  None of those work...

So, I was messing around in the FE install folder for steam (trying out some missing VC DLLs) when I noticed they have a redist folder with VC in there.

SOLUTION:

Go to your steam install folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Elemental Fallen Enchantress\redist) and install the two vcredist packages there.

Add the \localdataonly command line cmd on your .exe for Elemental.

So your .exe would look like this...

"C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Elemental\Elemental.exe" /localdataonly

then hit ESC when the error pops up and you good to go with the local copy on your disk.

its working too!

I really suspect that it is a steam problem. But its good that you point this out here for stardock to see, and I'm glad it is now working for you.

You may be right.  Typically steam would run those as part of the first game launch, but apparently it's not happening.

I am having a similar problem, but I get no error message I try and run the game it pops up in my processes and then just disappears... I have tried re-installing 3 times now twice on steam and once through the Stardock launcher.

Bought the game from Steam on day 1. Never had an issue launching it.

Please open your debug.err file in notepad, and link the contents into a post here. This will give us some technical information that can help troubleshoot your problem.

The file can be found in My Documents\My Games\FallenEnchantress

Be sure to copy the debug immediately after the error occurs; if you start the game again, the debug log will be erased and recreated for the new session.

DebugMessage: Version 0.00.000 last updated on: 10-30-2012 12:35
DebugMessage: Entering WinMain
Debug Message: Command Line:

It is blank, which I thought was strange also even though I played it once for several hours on steam and the steam time played counter only shows 1 minute played.

If that's all you've got then it's not any known common issue. Please mail support@stardock.com.
