Auto road building issues

Annoying things with auto road build.

1. Builds roads through areas you can't traverse so units have to get off the road, go around and rejoin.

2. Does not build roads using most direct route but often takes a circuitous route (maybe avoiding high terrain cost tiles?).

3. For far flung cities will often link up via an AI road network that you cannot use without a non-aggression act, so units still have to travel cross country to reach that city.

4. Road link-ups with non-friendly fractions gives them a highway to attack my cities, why would I ever voluntarily build such roads?  Auto-build does.

The strangest road that I had was between my first city and second city.  I founded my second city on the far side of a river.  The road went along the river for a whole extra turn of movement.  Can't they build a bridge or something.

The worst is when the roads go through the wildlands...... :)

It would be a nice touch if roads that linked with an AI fraction were only built when you made a trade agreement with them, and only that AI.

I'm going to see what beta 5 has done with roads before I comment further...

I've mentioned it before though: Road building mechanic is definately a deal breaker and could easily be the difference between an 8/10 and a 11/10. Too much 'auto' and users become frustrated for lack of control. Too much 'management' and you get road-spam problems.

That's why its nice someone pointed out 4 areas where the auto-roads are annoying, so the devs know more exactly what is annoying with the current roading system.

I agree.  If you can't build towns and capture resources in wild lands then roads shouldn't be auto built through them either!

Another issue I've noticed is that units do not exit cities onto your road from that city once you have them.  So you have to waste movement points moving onto the road connected to your city from an adjacent undeveloped tile you're auto-exited to as if you had no roads.

Sadly there is no mention of roads in the beta 5 patch notes.

Please don't refer to Michigan as "the wildlands".

Thanks.
