[0.952] Always CTD on Windows 8 from main menu

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 x64 today (through MS academic alliance) and installed the 0.952 patch after that. FE crashes everytime it reaches the main menu. FE worked one windows 7 without any crashes for me.

The debug log can be found here:

Let me know if you need further information.

Hi,

any news on this issue? I have reinstalled the whole game but it still crashes every time it reaches the main menu. Even compatibility mode didn't change anything.

Try deleting everything in your "C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Elemental - Fallen Enchantress\Screens\" directory and see if that resolves the issue.

If I may also suggest cleaning out the saved games, units and sovs from earlier games in your:

C:\Documents\My Games\FallenEnchantress\Units

C:\Documents\My Games\FallenEnchantress\Saves

That worked for me. (As well as the Screens deletion from Derek)  Previously I would click on a Sov under new game, hit Next and then crash.

Good luck!

I would also suggest you update your graphics card drivers. It looks like you have been waiting for windows signed driver updates, which are largely out of date and better performance/stability will probably be achieved in part by making sure you have gone to the Nvidia site and updated your drivers.

Here is the link to Nvidias Geforce GTX 460 Win8 x64 bit drivers.

Your posted debug shows your drivers to be almost 3 months old.

@naytchSG: Sorry I forgot to mention in the original post that I already did that at that time.

@Derek Paxton: This fixed the problem partially. After deleting this folder it crashed directly after launching the game. I tried that a couple of times and in combination with deleting the MyGames folder I was able to reach the main menu. "Problem solved" I thought but a new problem arose: every 3D content was just white/shades of grey ;-) Menu items and HUDs where visible but things like the sovereign in the sovereign selection window or the tactical map in the game were invisible. Zooming out to the cloth map worked though.

I remembered reading about something like this. Hence, I played around with the antialiasing settings (in-game, config file and global config). Somehow the problem got solved but its root still remains unclear to me. Suddently everything was back to normal although I'm using the previously set settings. Antialiasing works too. I never had these problem in WOM, previous betas or any other game.
