[0.952] Starting Locations need help

This morning I had a few hours to play, and wanted to get some more experience with Pariden and Altar.

3rd game in a row where it was not until 45 minutes in that I discovered the nearest place with any option at all to place a city was very very far (I would consider undefendably) from my original start location. These were all temperate maps, which are supposed to be relatively easy to expand on. I also have Dense Creatures and Powerful Magic.

Not to sound like too broken a record, but at least as an option, we should have a very high likelyhood of all of the following at any given starting location.

  • A place with Essence of 2
  • At least 1 shard within ZoC from the Essence
  • At least 1 other resource within +1 ZoC from start
  • At least 1 other option of any sort whatsoever for expansion within about 15 tiles.

Spending ~45 minutes each on 3 games in one morning only to discover that there were no feasible choices for expansion is pretty frustrating. Please offer us a "Utopian Starting Location" option with at very least the above as minimum for those of us who don't often get more than an hour or two to play. I like a challenge. I don't like spending 3 hours to still not have a competitive start.

I've found the starting locations to be very hit or miss still...mostly miss.

First game I started with 0.952 gave me a 4/3/2 with a 3/3/1 for a second city. I was really excited...and then the game crashed.

17 restarts later, consisting of either single city spots, spot that just plain sucked, no spots, or good spots but in horrible terrain, I finally came across the current game I'm playing. Saved it right away.

So, 1 out of 17 starts is a good start? Not very good odds...

We got a dev post about starting position refinement a little while ago. My guess is that it was not fully implemented in beta 4 and 4a. I would expect that Beta 5 shows a better starting location mechanic.

Hate to say it, but it even got worse with the latest update.

Sometimes i'm getting starting locations without any tile yields (!) now, aproximately 2 times out of 10.
In CIV terms this would equal a settler starting... in the sea :-D.

Agree, its bad or worse now.  I've seen some craazy stuff.  Like 1 or Zero available settleable tiles, let alone any resources nearby.  Not to mention you may or may not get a shard.

I want to say WTF, cause using DENSE settings should increase the probability that you get some resources.  I've had just as crappy starts with dense as not.
