WFX5 Windows 7 NVidia 9800GT driver crashes

Hi Guys,

While I love the effects in FX5 and have persisted for ages I can take it no longer...

My NVidia driver keeps crashing and recovering frequently during my day, it could be when my background changes, I open a window, move a dialog, run a program, move a program from one screen to the other - anything that involves graphic manipulation, which is nearly everything you do in Windows 7...

My graphics card is NVidia 9800GT with 1GB RAM, BIOS version 62.92.89.00.00 running at 550 core, 800 memory and 1375 shader, using driver version 301.42 (8.17.13.0142) on Win7-64 bit, 8GB RAM i7 CPU...

I even tried "dumbing down" the GPU to 300GHz and it made no difference.

I tried turning off WindowBlinds leaving FX5 on, still crashes, so I turned off FX5, NO CRASHES, turned WB7 back on, still no crashes, turned FX5 on - BANG! Crashes the nvidia driver. Turned off FX5, no crashes...

Any ideas on how to make them play together?

Thanks,

dueWest

You could also try rolling back the driver to the 285 version.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies.

No NTune installed, in fact I ran a utility called Driver Fusion from treexy.com that lets you select a section (like NVidia) and it deletes everything associated with it - files, reg entries, the works.

So now only the driver is in place with the NVidia control panel, no nForce networking - IDE - audio - GART.

Wizard1956 I was using 296 version and having the crashes, so I updated to the latest version to see if that resolved the issue before posting in the forum, still the same crashes... :( I will downgrade to the 285 driver and let you know what happens.

Any other ideas or input from anyone would be appreciated!

Thanks,

dueWest

Running an 8800GT, the 301 and 296 were both problematic.  I found the 285 to work the best.

Hi,

Yep - been working away for hours now with 285 installed and all the works running across both monitors, WFX5 and WB7 all behaving even with the GPU clock cranked up!

This is positive and looks like it's a winning combo!

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Cheers.

You're welcome but now the question remains:  Is this something nVidia needs to fix, or Stardock?

Clearly, something is wrong  somewhere that needs to be addressed. It seems to be most troublesome with multi-monitor setups.

While nVidia is ultimately responsible for their drivers, it may be in SD's best interest to develop a workaround if possible.

People aren't going to be happy if they have to use old drivers to be able to use new software with a new OS now that WFX5 has Win8 support.

Wiz....at a guess I'd say it's an nVidia issue....assuming WFX5 is set for Win8 the Q becomes....is the nVidia driver also?  If not it can be the new compatibility they'd need to catch up with...;)
