Late Game Content

I just finished my first game on .95 (well i did not finish but i can any sec since the AI has one city) I think the game is much better but I am not loving the end game.

I have defeated every creature on the map besides the epic quests and my sovereign is only lvl 5. This is very detrimental because, I have conquered the entire map minus one city which will go down as soon as i cross the border basically. And now i have nothing to do. I have a city on every point that had the ability to settle a city on, and yet still I am not very far on tech and I have no more monsters to kill. But until my tech catches up I can't do the epic's cause they are too hard.

I think the cities really need a different method of resource than just the tile they are built on. I conquered the swamp city Dyowhatever and it has 5 grain (great) and 0 production  -_-  and no essence to enchant hammers it seems to me that the epic city should have a huge amount of essence...anywho

I think this game needs some more late game content for the completionist in us all. Maybe add new realms or something. Places where there are ultra high lvl characters to fight. Or add a building that gives quests from cities (tavern, palace, etc)

Also I think cities are better but they still feel a bit meh. I don't care about my cities and they are too easy to conquer. I should not be able to just roll in with my sov and 3 heroes, or just my sov late game, and get out without any issues. Maybe your citadel (capital city) gets bonus defenses based on shards, you know, like you get a tower that shoots flame arrow every turn per fire shard you have. Something to make me fear combat. ATM it is way to easy to just ignore everything on the map and just rush cities.

I really liked the old method in war of magic that made harder monsters appear after certain events happened.

As it is the game is shaping up nicely (still has bugs and crashes to desktop but those are easy to ignore) I am more concerned about the pacing and such.

I think the reason why your Sovereign was only level 5 is because you used him together with 3 heroes and that reduces the amount of xp per battle. If you use the Sovereign with normal units he should level much faster.

Yeah, there need to be more defensive buildings, like the mage tower, you mentioned, for conclave cities or an archery tower for fortress cities.

Exp is split amongst heroes but not amongst other units, so try to stay with only 1-2 heroes per group. Other units get exp without taking it away from the heroes.

It sounds like you should change your map settings when creating a game. I have enjoyed increased tech because I get to see more of the tree even on a small map.

I also have enjoyed verdant or mountain the most because you get good pieces of land in both cases. In addition I always play high amounts of monsters to make it more fun to fight stuff.

For magic nodes, you can have fun with any setting unless you are trying to build a pure mage in which case turn it to max of course, but for the other settings I recommend fast tech, verdant or mountains landscape and high density of monsters. I use normal density of resources always.

I understand that xp is equally split up but a user should never run out of content, or they need to give fighting enemy armies more xp. And the end-game loot is pretty sissy.

Yep. Been wanting stuff like this for ages. Especially ways to gain new quests, such as through an Inn.

Well, I'm not yet in the late game, but I'm already feeling the bordem. Once you clear out your territory, there is no reason to defend your cities, so long as you have troops at the choke points.

I do like the fact that a city provides city militia, but they're never needed...

Definately think there should be RPG plot points throughout the game were additonal rifts, portals, caverns, comets, etc all splash in monsters for you to deal with. Would make having a 'small' empire much more interesting to deal with.

Also, just as you can come across 'Inns' for quests in the early game, you should be able to build an 'Inn' in your city mid-late game. Then...when your hero stops by that city, he gets a quest option if he goes to the inn. That would be a really nice add for having your heros 'make the rounds' from time to time...

What size map are you playing on?  How many opponents?  What level of difficulty?  There are options when you're starting the game to change the pacing, try speeding up the pacing on tech or growth and increasing the monster density.

Not that it is in the dev's plans, but certain quests can be repeatable according to the XML. So you could increase content by having a single quest work as a quest giver. It would have 5 possible quests to choose from. Once you complete 5 of them, it could open up a new series of quests in the game. I am currently working on a few quest packs that add new quests as you complete the ones currently available.

From a developer perspective, late game content only runs out for hardcore players. We are a minority in their demographic. That means you will have to rely on modders to add more content than what is given to us in Beta 5. With the wonderful modding capabilities of the game, I already have two content mods ready for release on day one. I have over 300 quests and probably around 30 new items I am working on. So you won't be lacking content anytime soon.

Have to agree with this.  By the time my units have reached deadly status, so have my opponents on any reasonable level of play--sooner in some cases, since I tend to play Pariden, and they're very slow starters.  On a medium sized map, several normal level opponents, no exploits, Pariden is hard-pressed to pull out a win.  Large map, it's certainly possible.  No boring moments, however.

first game i did a small normal difficulty with default settings. I had a good start but the NPCs took all the quests.

I would have though that any quest that is rpg directed, aka, pushes the plot and storyline of the game, would only be avaialble to the player. Shocking to think that the AI is able to take the EPIC quests away from you...
