Special Message Screen Freezes

Whenever I get a special message of a discovery and three options on how to exploit the discovery the game essentially freezes. I cannot choose any of the options and cannot proceed from that screen. The only thing I can do is contol-alt-delete and hope the event doesn't re-occur, which it usually does.
