Graphics overhaul requested

Are there any plans on reworking the graphics?  One of the reasons why the original Elemental: War of Magic wasn't as popular was due to the graphics style.  It would be nice to improve the graphics close to at lease civ V or warlock: master of the arcane level.

I understand much time has been invested into this project as is and the chance of a graphics change would be highly improbable however the need for the change is there.  When I first saw the the screens shots of the original title, I was not impressed and only bought it due to it being a stardock title and hoping for the best.

Times has change.  While graphics does not determine how good a game is, it does help in the presentation and lead to more sales.  Sales is what ultimately helps a company to be profitable, stick around, hire more people and to make more games.  I hope Stardock understands this and tries to give this game a much needed facelift so that more copies will be sold.  Investing time in game balancing and bug fixes is great, however if the game doesn't look attractive to the buyer, it will have a hard time selling and all the investment put into the game to make it right will go down the drain.

As it stands right now, this game is currently targeted to a small niche market and this audience will not be enough to make it profitable for ongoing series.  By reaching out to a broader audience, sales will increase and help this title gain the attention it deserves.

Upgrade the graphics to Warlock: MOA level? In my opinion FE is much prettier than Warlock.

End of giraffa65's quote

I agree.

I hope they add more graphics to represent every single detail in the work.

I honestly dont think they need to rehaul the whole system, but if needed I could point out some places where the graphics could use a notch up.
(Sovereign Creation for one).

Graphics for tiny citizens travelling the roads, meaby a tiny hut near edges of the forests for no reason.

Small villages near the rivers (meaby as a resource/boosting food).

How silly.  I hope you didn't register an account on the forums just to make this inane post.

Graphics are what is wrong with games today. I love the look of Elemental. Not sure how different graphics would help the game improve.

Lol.

Kael, Brad, have you given any thought into turning this game into a FPS?

Please reply.

I was gonna buy FE but it doesn't use DX11 and tesselation. How am I supposed to justify the $500 I spent on my graphics card?

Pre-occupation with graphics is what's almost killed TBS.  If only Endless Space had gameplay as good as its graphics.  I'll take Distant Worlds and its 2D sprites over it any day.

Fallen Enchantress' graphics are just fine.

Heh. Endless Space is pretty sterile. I am having more fun with SOTS 2 as broken as it is than I had with the almost bug free Endless space.

Graphics were the least of the problems WoM had.

FE's graphics do the job very well. You can look into citizens doing its affairs inside the city walls, your units are fully customizable (whay they are using show up in the models). Besides that, it has an unique style, very particular, of the kind you don't see everywhere.

Better graphics = fewer people can run it = smaller user base. Tbs 4x fans do not come primarily for graphics but gameplay. The graphics in FE is more than enough for what it accomplishes - seamless integration between a marvellous strategic map and tactical battles with hundreds of units in them.

If you see anything in particular that looks especially ugly, you should point that out. A graphics overhaul at this point is not going to happen. And why should it, when it looks better than every game it is competing with?

Warlock: MA - a bunch of ugly looking cities sprawling into every single tile. Non-customizable units and heroes - if you equip a flaming bow of doom on a champion he doesn't change equipment at all. Ugly yellow rings around units to indicate magical buffs, red ones to indicate curses - LAZY effects. Complete lack of tactical combat. Terrain is the only thing that is slightly better than FE.

Might and Magic Heroes 6: - Great-looking units but you only get up to 20 in a fight so it never ever reaches that "epic" feeling. Again heroes that equip things do not actually have them on the models. Horrible-looking cities in pre-determined places. World resources that look like they were made for warcraft 3. This game of course has the best-looking terrain, but maybe that's easy to accomplish when you are (and I'm not even joking here) missing a random map generator.

Conquest of Elysium 3 - sprites. Yeah.

I love FE graphics. They really give a 'fantasy' feel to the game.

The graphics are good.

WoM graphics were terrible, FE graphics are stellar in comparison. The game looks better than Warlock:moa in my opinion.

And I am one of maybe 2-3 people on these boards that think graphics are important for a TBS. :)

I downloaded the most recent beta, and I have to say, that it looks far better than WoM.  I was especially impressed with the cloth map.  Although I did notice one strange thing.  There was this still picture as the game was loading up of this wizard with a skull on his chest, a cool pic, but there was clipping in it.  His skin was popping through his robes.  Seems hard to miss...

I have a top of the line gaming rig, as I am sure you do and many others do.  There's no reason to complain about graphics they're awesome and I can't say enough good things about the art and graphics.

Is this topic for real ?   Trollolololol.

A graphics overhaul at this stage?

Do you even know what's involved in software development?

Obviously not.

As it stands, the graphics are sufficient for the game and frankly game play is always far above graphics as a metric. Time spent on eye candy is time NOT spent on a better UI, AI and overall playability.

My first impressions were graphics were okay, and I wasn't necessarly excited by the graphics. But then I thought about it some, and that this game looks like a canvas picture come to life. Each scene depicts a nice image that people would have on their wall. I do not think these graphics need an overhaul.

I grew to appreciate these graphics and now enjoy playing with these graphics. In part, the original post has a good point and selling this game on graphics will not be an easy one to do for most gamers. Then again seeing a new art style from the usual games does take some time to appreciate.

I don' t know what the dev's original goal was for the graphics of this game, but I image it is supposed to look like a hand drawing or painting come to life, and if that is their goal then I say they have achieved this goal with high marks.

I also think the graphics are JUST FINE and require no real changes, much less an "overhaul"...

To the OP: any SPECIFIC, CONSTRUCTIVE ideas about improving the game are welcome, but general and pointless criticisms such as yours are not at all helpful...

Graphics are fine.
They may lack insane texture resolutions and bazillions of polygons per model, but the look is consistent, evocative and has a distinct style.

The only field i would wish for an overhaul are the faces in character creation..... for a 2012 (maybe 2013) game they are very generic, sometimes downright ugly, most of the hairstyles look like plastic helmets.
And the color sliders are a bit cumbersome at times (e.g. for skin tones).

But other than that world graphics and monster designs are a pleasure to look at.
