CursorFX not working for me....

Hi everyone, I stumbled across this website and decided to download the free version of CursorFX version 2.11 to see if I liked it enough to purchase it.  I have a problem though, it's not working.  I'm not sure what information you need from me but I do know I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

After downloading the software I'm able to open the control panel and view the different cursors, I was even able to download an extra cursor from the website and it appeared in the list of available cursors.  So I'm slowly figuring this out LOL.  However when I click "Apply", nothing happens.  I thought maybe to restart my computer to see if that worked, it didn't.  I went into the control panel and found where the mouse setting are and there was a box checked that said "check to allow third party apps to change the mouse...." or something like that.  That box is checked so I'm sure that's not the problem.  At this point I have no clue what I'm doing wrong or forgetting to do.........  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Cameron

Did you install as Admin?  If you go to Public Documents\Stardock\CursorFX\Themes and double click on a cursor file, what happens?

Note  CFX Version 2.11 is not a good build.  It has reported bugs and is awaiting an update.  https://forums.wincustomize.com/427145 This may or may not be contributing to your issue. You may want to just wait until it is fixed as v. 2.10 is no longer available.

I suggest contacting support@stardock.com and link to this thread. Your trouble may or may not be related, but since the devs are on a bug hunt, they may want some info from you as well.

P.S.The current problem with CFX is very recent and should be fixed soon. It really is a worthwhile, usable program. I've used the Pro version for several years now with no trouble at all. Well worth paying for, imho.

As I have said many times before: Updates break $h!+.

Right click Desktop.

Click on Personalize.  This is the same as: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization

Choose Change Mouse Pointers.

On the Mouse Properties Dialog box choose the Pointers tab and make sure the:   Allow themes to change mouse pointer is checked.

See if that helps.

Wizard1956 and everyone else, thank you for your help and suggestions.........when I double click on a cursor file I get a little pop up that says "Windows can't open this file and it prompts to either choose for windows to look up on the internet what program to use or for me to browse my programs and pick one to use.  I've tried picking CursorFX from a list of installed programs and when I do the theme editor opens up and the cursor I want to use is shown in all of its states.  I've gone to file/apply and file/save and apply and neither do anything......so that's where I'm at now, I'm not sure what else I could try.

@BigDogBigFeet, yes I've done exactly that previously.  It was already checked when I pulled that menu up and I even went as far as un-checking it and then re-checking it and hitting apply.  Nothing so far I've tried has worked.

Thanks Cameron

Ya I missed that in the OP.  Did you try opening CursorFX selecting My Cursors on the left then choose the CursorFX Default theme by Stardock Design (It's looks like more curved and a dark gray color).  With that theme selected click on Apply button on lower right.

You should also go here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\CursorFX and right click on the CursorFX exe file and choose Properties.

Look at the Security tab under Group and user names: you should see System, Administrator(your active account) and any users who have permission to use it.

Also, look at the box below that the Permissions for SYSTEM should all show allow (except Special) so Full Control Read Write etc need to show allow.

Is that all working?

I have this version of CursorFX 2.11 (Free) running on Win 7 Home Premium 64bit without any issues.  Sometimes downloading and installing a corrupted theme file can cause issues like this.

That will be the next thing to check.

Way back when, I had to reinstall CFX Free on numerous occasions. (it would stop working) I'm talking over 10 times. The only way I found to reliably get it uninstalled cleanly enough to get a good install was to use Revo Uninstaller on Moderate, and removing the bold-marked items. Add/Remove leaves too much crap behind, as you will see after Revo scans for leftovers. (Revo uses the programs own uninstaller first)

After you get it removed, redownload a fresh copy and try again. I can think of no other cause other than a bad install.

Do you have any security software running that would interfere with the install?

I think this has been fixed but in case the build you have hasn't been . . click the apply button twice.

I thought of that too, ZubaZ, but the fact that Windows doesn't know what to open a CFX file with tells me the program isn't properly installed. Reg entries misssing or something corrupted perhaps.
