Thoughts on Friends with Pirates

While at first this seemed cool, the longer I played, the more I did not like it.  It basically pulls the player out from being attacked by pirates completely and with any excess fleet capacity, their ships spawn in till you have no more fleet capacity.  This is bad in the sense that the player could loose all of their ships in a battle and in a short amount of time, have a fleet again that they did not have to pay for or produce.

On the flip side, I destroyed an opponents fleet and as I was building up the system I just took and repairing my fleet, I was again attacked by the player with a bunch of pirate ships that were sent to him because of this tech.

So if you have this tech and you max out your fleet capacity, you will get free ships up to your fleet capacity.

This seems to break the game.  I like the idea but I think something needs to change about it.

Well first of all, those are two seperate abilities.


"Truce Amongst Rogues" forms an alliance with all neutral factions, including the Pirates. There are already several complaints about this, and recently it has been moved up to a fourth (or fifth?) tier tech with several prequesites. Though making you neutral with the pirates isn't really the problem with this ability.

"Pirate Mercenaries" makes the pirates send ships to you to fill up your fleet capacity, this ability is honestly pretty much what the Vasari's old Dark Fleet ability was, and it has the same problems, the Dark Fleet ability was changed so it's an activated ability that spawns a set amount of ships and then goes on cooldown, I'd like to see the same thing happen for Pirate Mercenaries, personally.
