Confused - can't download/install

A little over a year ago I bought Object Desktop (although it isn't showing in my transaction history, but DOES show in Impulse). However, I didn't see the need to get the updates after the 'free' one year subscription period, so I didn't renew. Now I am unable to download/install any component of Object Desktop. Is this a glitch or am I not allowed to use the software I purchased because I didn't renew the subscription?

Thanks!

Object Desktop *is* a subscription service.  During your subscription you can download, install, un-install, reinstall, back-up and restore to your heart's content.  After the subscription is over you can continue using the software forever and restore your back-ups if you have them.

However, you are not able to download after your subscription is over.  Sorry.

On the bright side, you can renew at a discount at any time, no matter how long it has been since you were a subscriber.

Zubaz, could you please point out where on the product page it says or even implies that after your 1 year subscription to UPDATES and ObjectDesktop.net that you are unable to install the software again? The product page would seem to imply that the only time limit is if you wish to get updates. If that is not the case, I didn't buy applications, I bought a subscription - which is not indicated on the product page. As a result, I would like to know whom to contact for a refund.

I did. I see all of my games and ObjectDock, just none of the ObjectDesktop applications. I don't even see it in my transaction history.

From the Object Desktop page (stardock.com/products/odnt):

A Year Of Free Updates
When you purchase Object Desktop, you automatically get a 1-year subscription to ObjectDesktop.net and not only get all of the features Object Desktop has today, but all of the features for a full year.
This means you will receive all updates and new programs added to Object Desktop throughout the year automatically. What you download is yours forever and at the end of the year, you can continue your subscription or stick with what you already have

From the store page (https://store.stardock.com/product/ESD-SDS-W011)

"Includes a 1 year subscription to ObjectDesktop.net - access to new components and updates to the existing components"

I'm sorry that it wasn't clear to you . . .but it's not unclear.

No, what you're describing is a "license", which is NOT what the product page says. Nothing you posted indicates one is no longer able to download the last version they had access to at the time of the end of the 1-year subscription TO UPDATES AND OBJECTDESKTOP.NET.

This is what I see...and the way I read it, the product is available for 1 year (updates included)...

Sorry for your confusion.  I'll bring up your concerns with the marketing people.

On the other hand though, there is nothing on that page that indicates that we are obligated to provide software to ex-subscribers forever.

Again, you can use the software you installed forever and can use your back-ups for as long as you have them.

So... I purchase the applications, don't renew the subscription to the updates, switch to a new computer and attempt to re-install everything, but I'm SOL because I didn't subscribe to the updates?

If you have the installers, or a back-up, you could install again.

I was under the impression I was buying, not leasing, the applications - so I did not download the installers.

Yes, you were 'buying' and, by the terms of that purchase you not only had 12 months in which to download and install, you also had access to any and all updates within that same period.

Stardock cannot be held responsible for your subsequent 'loss' of that which you purchased when you changed computers/whatever.

Your only/best option is to renew the subscription AND make a specific point of downloading the product/s to be stored locally to avoid future repetition.

As an example, I have very early downloads of Stardock's products...some 15 years old, even though I have no intention of ever allowing my subscription to lapse.

In EXACTLY the same fashion I have downloads of various MS Operating Systems from Technet stored, yet have no intention to let that sub lapse either.

I understand your concern but it's no different then any other software you would purchase at a store or through a download. I have all the .exe programs that come with ObjectDesktop and the serial numbers. If my membership ran out and I got a new computer, reformatted, etc I could install the prograsms I have without having any subscription. Now lets say you get a new computer with a different OS. Without having updated software it may or maynot work correctly and that goes for the software you may have purchased at a store or downloaded. They will not give you the updates without additional money. You state that it was just a little over a year that you purchased OD. The .exe programs and serial numbers have been available everyday for download. Anytime you have downloaded software from the internet that doesn't come on a disc you should always have it backed up no matter where you purchased it from. Here is an example. You purchase Photoshop from a store for $700.00 in a box with a disc. You lose the disc and reformat, buy a new computer. You will not be able to go to Adobe and download it without paying another $700.00. Know this doesn't help you right now but if it's something you have never done I would do it with anything you purchase. The real name of the game is save and BACKUP.

I believe you can renew now for $24.95 or close to that. In my opinion that is a real bargain and if you do that and never want to renew again you can save the program.exe files and have them forever. Now that you understand the situation go ahead and renew and you will get the latest programs to have forever.

Just keeping your subscription current avoids all the hassles. Think of it this way. With some Antivirus software you have to pay so much every six months in order to keep the service, same as a subscription but with ODNT you pay less than what a good Antivirus costs and only once a year. At the price its very much a great bargain considering how much you get for it. Individually those programs can cost over $100.00 US. To renew your sub is one quarter of that plus you get all updates and downloads free for one year. Can't beat that. IMO

Click on the link in reply #5. Go to the store and access your account. Everything is right there. Renew and its a done deal. All yours.

No, there are no options, at all, of any kind, to renew the subscription. Not on the product page, not on any page in my account. The only place any record of my purchase of those applications exists is in the "Order History". That too lacks any link or option to renew.

You can renew at https://www.stardock.com/products/odnt/odrenew.asp using your first and last name and email or using the serial number.

There is a link to that page on the Object Desktop Purchase page.
