[Suggestion]Pioneer Packs

Like in WoM...I really liked being able to make a custom unit to act as a pioneer...these base ones are really pathetically weak and escorting them can be a bit of chore if you have a small standing army like I normally do. So...I dunno if it's already been planned, but it would be nice if the pack that makes a unit able to settle new cities was available. Probably would be pretty heavy, but I'd consider that a fair trade off.

Note: If there is something like this already...I haven't found it tinkering with custom units...so if there is please direct me how to find it. :)

There is, but it's obscure - if you edit the existing Pioneer they keep the ability to settle/build outposts. I typically build speedy/mounted pioneers for the midgame.

So, despite it existing in the game, I'll throw in my vote for this to be a piece of equipment, not an inherent trait to one unit - it's extremely opaque to a new player to have to edit one specific unit to be able to make a 'new' pioneer.

Ah I see...I didn't think you could edit the base ones. Thank you for telling me. I played WoM a lot and always made my own design for pioneers there. As a rule I don't play around too much with existing designs for fear of messing up my game.

I never tried to edit the base ones, as there isn't anything telling that would even work.

I guess to save cost you also want to make your custom ones Weak, Conscript, and train them as the smallest group size; although it bugs me a little bit to do so on principle.  It differs from galciv in that there's no trade off:  in that game Fast constructors or Long range colony ships were at least  a little more expensive ; Weak conscript small Pioneers are just better for no cost.

Well I actually prefer to make my pioneers pretty tough so they can go off into fogged areas and hunt good spots to settle, as my main forces are normally clearing monster lairs, or doing quests and can't be bothered escorting missions for the basically helpless basic pioneer.

I think most of the time you would be better off training one spearman and one weak pioneer seperately.  Still, I'll grant that there are times when you want Hardy Pioneer, and that's cool.  There are still plenty of times when you have some routine task suitable for Weak Pioneer, like in the midgame you already know the site is clear.

It's a little bit hard to express why i don't like this design but I'll try.  The things that bug me is that (1) the AI will probably never use Weak Pioneer even though sometimes it's optimal, (2) because all traits are open it kind of kills immersion.  One of the races has a "special" unit Conscript Pioneer that thematically seems like it is to be a special perk, but on turn one of every game you could choose to make an even more-specialized and therefore more optimal unit.  It's really the whole unit design concept, although Pioneers is such a simple case that the default unit is provably non-optimal.  Analogy, It's like if in a Medieval game it said:  the English and Welsh have these great longbowmen, but if you want you can push the "Have Even Better than Welsh Longbow for the Same Price" button on turn one.  If you don't like it then don't push the button. Huh?
