Help with DeskScapes

HI.

After 2 weeks of trying many thing, and suggestions, I had to, at least temporarily, uninstall Dreamscapes all together. No matter what I did it kept locking up my PC. Even disabling it did not work. Now with it fully uninstalled my system runs fine again.

All I run in the background is Norton 360, Malwarebytes, WindowBlinds (latest), Icon Packager and Cursorfx. All of which "should" play well together, with the possible exception of Norton. I am actually starting to get sick of this program. It is the free one from Xfinity and many people have complained because it is a massive program and does WAY more than just Anti-Virus, which is all I require of it. I had read/heard that the latest Comodo Internet Security is actually rated the best free one out there.

Questions: Are there any known issues with StarDock products and Norton as I doubt all the other Stardock products would not interfere with each other?

Where would you start to troubleshoot now that I can actually use my system?

Should I open a support ticket on this?

Thanks so much!!

Joe

do you have an on board graphic card? or did you buy one and put it in?

if you bought one check for drive up dates ... if your using one that came built on the mother board might think about buying a GC..

might need more ram to. how much ram do you have?

also give more details are you on XP vista 7  bit 32 or 64

If you plan to get rid of Norton, do so. Comodo or Avast! are fine as free go.

Then see if there's a problem.

FYI: Do NOT simply uninstall Norton through Add/Remove Programs. Go to the Norton website and download the removal tool.

I recommend Avast, it has been working well on every rig I installed it on. (over a dozen)

I use Norton with all our apps and haven't had any issues.  Norton rates better than most others.

Can you not temporarily disable Norton and Malwarebytes to see if Deskscapes runs ok?  And did you have them disabled while you installed Deskscapes?

Used to be a p.i.a.

Now it's rated well, but if joelore thinks it's a problem...

Maybe ask Zubaz for help. He's in Support and is quite knowledgeable.

Will do right now. I downloaded the latest Comodo and was going to install this morning. Should I leave Norton on for now? I also uninstalled DeskScapes should I reinstall it?

@Wizard1956:

I hear you. Been there done that and will do. I use Revo uninstaller first then run the Norton remover. Works great.

Will post any findings.

Ticket opened. I am still on the edge of removing Norton and installing Comodo.

I used to use comodo religiously but changed because of some bugs that they have actually fixed in the new version.

Not sure what to do right now. I mean I can always go back to Norton. It is free and I have the installer. Any opinions?

Thanks,

Joe

Try something other than Norton, you have nothing to lose. Avast is free and easy to remove if you want to switch later.

I don't know if this has been asked, but what, if any codec packs do you have installed?

And you're saying the entire PC becomes unresponsive and has to be restarted?  How about when you play other video files?

Somehow, this doesn't sound like a DS issue. ???

It isn't, Wiz. I'd bet it's a codec issue.

Jooe needs to do a format, W7 clean install and then ONLY vital apps (ODNT, etc.). Then work only from a "Standard" account. Not Administrator.

Don't have any codecs installed except for the Microsoft Camera update of about a month ago. I can always uninstall it.

Well I just got off a chat with a Norton tech, he said deep inside this program it's actually Norton 360 so if I treat it as such I might be able to troubleshoot better. He said the first thing is to completely uninstall it, then reinstall and he gave me a set of settings that may help. He also recommended adding Deskscapes and all the dreams, as those are the ones it lock up on, to the exclusion list as it rescans the dream file EVERY time it is refreshes, so that's thousands of times per screen.

I have to give him a heads up after and then he said to wait for Stardock tech support to weigh in and tell them I talked to Norton.

Norton is very familiar with all Stardock products so he does not think it's a combination of Dreamscapes and Norton. It also may be my video card or drivers. I just installed the latest and they seem flaky. I may downgrade to the last ones which seemed rock solid.

Will post any findings.

Stop there.

Joelore...if you have Norton installed and paid for...leave it installed until it runs out. I used Norton for 8 years without any problem related to Stardock stuff or anything else for that matter so I doubt it has anything to do with it. Some people have had problems with Norton and are real quick to have you uninstall it as well...so don't be to quick to jump on that bandwagon...you paid for it...use it.

I don't remember what OS your using...but if it's XP I had problems with dreams not working quite right as well. Some dreams worked some didn't. I'd just remove the dreams that don't work and keep the ones that do.

Yes I left Norton installed and am using Windows 7 x64. I had to uninstall deskscapes though in order to run my system. I got a reply from Tech Support and sent them a series of files. so we shall see.

Joe, just lose Norton and get this over with.

You said you are using the free version of Norton. I assume you have paid for DeskScapes. It should be a no-brainer as to which one has to go.

Norton has a free version? :O And Norton works just fine Joelore...some people just can't deal with it. 8 years...no problems. Just ignore the haters. ;)

That's what he said, and if a Norton tech told him the issue IS with Norton, why not at least try it with Norton uninstalled. Just seems like a logical step to me. ;)

Actually, running both of those in the background (meaning you are running Malwarebytes Pro) that in itself can cause problems. Never run more than one full time malware scanner/anti virus program at a time.

All I can say about Norton was way back in 2001 on XP (AKA my first OS) with a Paid version of (Norton) and it said it found a Virus .. I said: oh shit and clicked on REMOVE

NORTON said are you shitting me ? I just want to you know you have a Virus I'm NOT going to get ride of it you'll have to find a FREE program to do that

so try avast..

oh screw Norton paid for it and can't even remove the Virus it can find ..  what's the logic in an Anti-Virus Program that can find it but can't remove it . and yet a FREE one (Avast) Can..

P.S And never looked back to Norton again or ever will ...
