BGINFO vs Stardock Fences

They don't play well together

I apologize in advance if this has already been discussed but... has anyone run into trouble when installing Stardock Fences on a system where BGINFO is running? I was going to buy the Pro Version when I realized that after installing the trial that my BGINFO information no longer appears. If I disable Fences, it returns. Ideas?

Okay, so just what is BGINFO? :sun:

Keep in mind that there can be conflicts between programs, sometimes it just gets hard to get them to work together.

I may be wrong but have heard this problem before somewhere. Think this person may be talking about this. Link

@Phoon - Server 2003 by any chance?
End of bradstone68's quote

the particular system that I have fences running on is Server 2008. I can test it on Server 2003 but that will take me some time to put it all together. ( dont want to randomly install fences on a live production server ). The 2008 box is one I have sitting at my desk for admin functions only and serves no critical role....

@Phoon I understand that totally. I think I may have to uninstall Fences.

what version of Fences? The one I'm using on the 2008 box is Fences Pro v1.1.0.370.

I see that the latest is 1.10.419

I just "checked for updates" and it says I am using the most current version.

the update function does not work. you will need to go to your product registrations page and download the full installer. You should uninstall the old version prior to running the new one though.

Now...

I created a virtual server 2003 system (fortunately I had a 2003R2 SP2 template made), joined it to the domain and installed fences.

BGInfo and Fences co-exist just fine. Don't know what to tell you at this point...

Thank you Phoon! I bet it is in our GPO or something...

@Lantec right now I only have the Free version as I wanted to see how it worked in this environment prior to purchasing.

I might be able to give you some good pointers on using bginfo with group policy, especially if you have more than one domain controller.

I've got a nifty batch file that does it based on which DC you hit.

I would like that Phoon! Currently I am using VBS that I run locally on each server.

I'll write a tutorial for you tomorrow when I'm at work so I can see it all. Think you'll like it.
