Website demographics

Being a visitor to each of the major skin sites, it's really interesting how over the past several months each one has attracted its own type of user. And how those users have really made an impact of the website in question.

For example, on DeviantArt, the user base tends to be 15 to 25 year olds and the conversations there revolve around that more than what you see here (discussions on youthful love and high school and that sort of thing).

Over here the user base seems to be older and discussions tend to reflect that as well.

The question is the standard chicken or egg thing. What causes this sort of thing to happen?

DevArt has no moderation. Instant lower treshold. And DeviantART sounds a lot cooler to high school kids than WinCustomize. It has lots of low threshold sections like Poetry and such too.

Now LotsOfSkins has a real sucky name, so it's just the diehards that hang around there. As for SkinBase, it's still unknown to the masses. And finally Customize... hmmm, pure nostalgia I guess.

And the egg was first.

Quiet Tarkus or I'll take away your cane!

My theory is that DeviantArt has poetry and speaking from personal experience, active poets tend to be 16 through 21 in age because it's the "coming of age" time frame.

I'm in an interesting discussion there about relationships and it's always interesting to hear an 18 year old speak of undying love (or eternal anything for that matter). When I was younger, I wrote poetry believe it or not -- I was the editor of my high schools poetry booklet for 2 years and in college started a poetry magazine for our residence hall.

But I haven't written a poem in years. Maybe I'm just more cynical now or that no specific issue stands out enough to be that passionate about.

I do agree that moderation of the message boards here changes the dynamics quite a bit. To a 20 year old, moderation = censorship and we've been brainwashed to think that censorship is always "bad". But as we get older and we have to juggle time hanging out here with things like taking care of kids, making dinner, working, cleaning, etc. one appreciates not having to waste time and energy reading noise.

Just my 2 cents.

Let's also not forget that DevArt is more rooted in digital "art" than in "mere" skinning.

We need to get some poetry going here.

There once was a man from Nantucket.....

Whoa Tarkus. That's way too much high falutin' culture for this place. Howabout:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I got gas.

I guess we can infer that digital social interaction resembles that of physical social interaction.

I think its because this is predominantly an ex-skinz.org crowd which was always older than the Deskmod crowd. I'm sure the name Deviant is a lure to a younger crowd as well while wincustomize has a serious edge to it. I kinda view it like DeviantART is like the alternative music style site and wincustomize is the classic rock place.

But dont worry, there are some kids here. Case and point the lil comment on one of our skins by the factory. I'm sure that tard hasnt started shaving yet.

Well, on other sites they have topics like "What song as you listening to" Here, it's "how many bunyons do you have?"
Well when the topics here turn to "my depends are bunching up", "has anyone tried Gas-X" or "Christ my dentures are irritating my gums" i'm gone.

Could be worse. Imagine what it's like on some of the sex websites:

"Name that rash!" (28 posts)
"It burns..oh the burning!" (19 posts)
